Yes i know i know i used starting fluid blah blah blah but the glow plugs were not hooked up, and i tried to not spray it directly into the intake. I am sure i will still get sh** for it. she runs pretty smooth for a junk yard find and very little blowby as far as i can tell .... now just have to find a turbo. Anyone have any sitting around haha

I love it! Running a 617 on a swing. Started up promptly. Must have good compression. Where was the fuel supply?
Seems like a small boat for that engine.

well it had already started before that video was taken ... i just used a small bottle for the fuel supply (same one i use for the diesel purge on my sd). yes its only 17 feet I am hoping to keep the performance of the original engine without working the benz motor too hard

sitting here staring at the engine wondering how in the !@#$@@! I am going to get everything perfectly centered to the crank. Anyone have any ideas? I have to center the mercruiser bell houseing on an adaptor plate as well as the coupler on the flywheel. Anyone have any drawings with measurements of the 617 bell housing?

Update.... Might just be talking to myself now but here is a much cleaner engine almost ready for some marine paint!

Probably the most filthy engine i have ever worked on. I don't think the engine bay of that poor junk yard 123 was ever washed or cleaned. It has taken me 4 days so far of cleaning and its still not done!

Checked the timing chain stretch today and it was dead on at 9 degrees atdc just like the fsm says. I checked several times using dial indicator. Preformed a valve adjustment while the cover was off and also took out all the glow plugs and injectors. Injectors are soaking in diesel currently, I need to decide if i want to have them rebuilt. Is anyone still doing this on the forum? The glow plugs had very little carbon on them at all and I am hoping that they are all working... going to test them, what is the best way to do this?

I did a search for pop tester and this is one of the results:

best way to test Glow Plugs is to hook them up to a battery... if they glow, they are good...

I was able to find a turbo from another member here for a great deal, but if it falls through i will definitely be contacting you. I am however missing all 4 of the six nuts and washers and 1 stud that holds the manifold on the engine. Happen to have any of these?

Also missing half of the turbo drain tube I think.

Update: still cleaning for paint.... ever time i look at the engine i see more grime i missed. Also ordered all my gaskets today so engine should be going back together in the next week then I will be starting on a bell housing adaptor and figuring out how i am going to get everything perfectly center to the crank (any help on this would be appreciated).

Look what I found!!

This guy should be a direct bolt on then put engine in boat! Fab some mounts up and done!

http://www.4x4labs.com/2010/01/diesel-conversions-are-finally-here/

Little more money that i was wanting to spend though but it may be my only option. I don't know of any machine shops or how much they would even charge me to perform something like this.

Interesting project. I have a 26' Sea Ray cuddy that has a GM gas engine that I wanted to repower it with a 4BT or 6BT.

Do you have enough pan clearance in the bilge area?

Have you checked with Kennedy (KEP) for adaptors? They used to make a lot of adaptors for all sorts of engine/trans combinations.

Interesting. But... how would one...... open... the hood?

The 617 may be bulletproof and more reliable than your own two legs, but I think building an exhaust pipe that prevents opening the hood forevermore might be a tad short-sighted

Photoshop, I take it?

Too late now, but here is a boat with a 5 cylinder diesel engine already in it: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/boa/1708487452.html .

By the way, I am from Utah and will be driving my 200D there this summer.
