Replacing modulator valve

Tried a search with no luck.

Anyway, can the transmission modulator valve be changed with the transmission in the car?

Also, can someone point me to directions on how to do it?

Thanks,

Glenn

Before you change the modulator, what kind of problems are you having?

The reason I ask is replacing the modulator is a little involved, with the adjustment, and it will save you a lot of grief if you check other things first. About the only thing I've seen here that indicates a faulty modulator is a vaccuum leak. BTW, changing the little rubber cap usually solves that problem.

Here is some info for the modulator: Vacuum Modulator links thread

SD Blue has some very good words !!
There are several different modulator valves depending on your trans serial number.
Fix your vac system & then if necessary try adjusting the modulator. It should only be adjusted with the aid of a gauge. If you have access to an auto trans manual you will see what I am talking about.

try to adjust what you have 1st

Replacing the vac. modulator is easy (atleast on a 86 SDL)

yours is similar two 5or6 millimeter bolts hold a retaining plate

that keeps modulator from falling out

take out those bolts pull off vac. line and pull it straight out maybe a little wiggle

make sure the O-ring and the push rod come out of the hole and nothing gets left behind

your push rod maybe one piece (attached to modulator) some are two piece

getting it out and a new one back in is easy

use u-joint on allen socket it' easier to get to top bolt

but adjusting the new modulator is what is a little trickey

I just replaced the modulator on my sister's 190E yesterday, that was a PAIN. It is concealed up inside the tunnel, so you have to drop the trans to get at it. Entire project took 7 hours.

The old one had a ruptured diaphram and was sending tons of trans fluid up into the engine intake.
