Cheap Mobil 1 truck oil?

A parts store near me has "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Motor Oil 5W-40" on sale for $2 a quart. I'm due for an oil change (expensive Lubro Moly oil in there now), should I use it considering my car isn't a truck and doesn't have a turbo? I wonder if there is really a difference compared to regular Mobil 1.

The store is Strauss Auto on Fresh Pond Road in Queens if any one is interested.

WOW, grab up as much as you can of that. 2 bucks a quart, it is usually 7 bucks a quart.

Yes that will be a fine oil for your 300D.

I didn't divulge that I already bought 11 quarts. I didn't want to look like an idiot if it wasn't a good idea I'll pick up some more tomorrow, they have a lot left and not too many people drive trucks in NYC.

I would buy it all. At $8 a gallon it is a steal. Congratulations!

It's great oil (especially for winter) but because it's such a thin oil you will probably start having oil leaks. I put some in my 300SD and it started leaking really badly. Same thing with my 200D. That engine got totally covered in oil and it leaked on the driveway. I switched to a 15W40 (also synthetic) and now the oil leaks have almost stopped completely.

Wow...that's a great deal!!!

On the oil leak question....I started using the 5w40 synthetic in my 1992 300D around 140,000 miles. I did have a leak at the front crank seal, but that's about it. Over 80,000 miles later it neither uses nor leaks one drop.

On my 1991 300D, I started using 5w40 when I purchased it with 77,000 miles. 11,000 miles later I've got some sort of minor leak....maybe a quart every 8,000 miles or so. Just keeping an eye on it for now.

Since when is a 40 weight oil thin?

A smiplified explanation on oil ratings, basically a 5W-40 is a 40weight oil equivalent when hot, but when cold (parked) it doesn't thicken any more than a 5weight oil does. This does not cause nor increase leaks.

The things that can cause or increase leaks are its ability to clean gunk that might otherwise be clogging oil passages as well as leak points, and the different amount of aeromatic content to create seal swell.

The Mobil 1 Turbo-diesel & Truck oil is an excellent group IV synthetic which is also labeled as Mobil Dalvac 1. I have used it for three decades in my diesel cars and heavy diesels also with great success and few leaks. At $2/gallon buy whatever you expect to use in the near future.

You have that backwards- It's a 5wt oil with the film strength of a 40wt. That's why it's thinner than 15w40, and recommended in newer vehicles for fuel mileage. Thinner oil pumps easier.

Dude, you're scoring big! Stock up!

Long Island, NY has deals the rest of the country just doesn't have.......I wonder if the 'mob' is involved in distribution - so to speak.......?

The 40C viscosity of this 5W-40 oil is essentially the same (14cSt more or less) as the 15W-40 oil. If it were not, it would be called a 5W-30 or a 5W-20 oil.

The difference is in the low temp pumpability...the 5w-40 pumps more easily at low temps (a good thing). But they are both in the same viscosity range at operating temp! Again, if the 40C viscosity were less than 12.5cSt, it would be called a 5W-30.

Thanks for the tips and info on viscosity. I'll pick up enough for a few more oil changes.

At $2 a quart that store is majorly losing $$ on that stuff. Wow.

Our local Meijer stores recently had it on sale for $19.99 a gallon, which is pretty darn cheap for M1....but I did not buy any. I'm sticking with Rotella 5w40. Between all of our vehicles we have put well over 100,000 miles on the synthetic rotella with 0 issues...so I am thinking it is pretty good stuff. My '82 SD has about 75k on the stuff so far....just did a change with it again saturday. I've still been able to get it for about $19.50 a gallon at Walmart here. Considering I have put nearly all of the miles since my timing chain was replaced (82k) on this oil....and the chain has not even stretched 1/2 a degree, it must be good.

The 617 does not like M1 IMHO, it made the engines louder and more "clattery" running on it. They sound more like a sewing machine/dieselish on the Rotella....a more pleasant sound.
