I'm getting my 300SDL back! Now what?

About 2 years ago I gave my half finished project car, an '87 300SDL, to a friend.

It's a long story but basically I had to get rid of it in a few days and luckily a friend of mine wanted it.

I had taken the powertrain out, put the engine on an engine stand, taken the head off, removed the oil pan along with most accessories. I did not remove the crank, pistons, conn rods/end caps/bearings.

Before I gave it away I put the oil pan back on and oiled everything up good (I mean everything and I mean GOOD).

During the past 2 years my friend never worked on the car, it was stored in his garage and I think it's safe to assume it was not oiled any further.

I'm a bit worried about rust in the cylinders, on the crank, cam, etc..

What sort of potential issues am I looking at here? Pitted cylinders that need to be bored or maybe just honed? Scotch Brite with some oil on it to clean things up?

Anyone been through this before? Any pointers?

Thanks!

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

As long as it was still sealed and exposed to moisture, it should be fine. If an critter chewed through and nested, then the seal has been compromised. However, it may need just scotchbrite and some oil.

If the oil pan was not removed again, the bottom end should be fine.

Looks like it's all good, pan is still on, oil just about dripping off of it, doesn't look very rusty at all.

My friend loaded a bunch of parts into the trunk and then diesel started leaking out of something just over the rear axle, near the middle. I have no idea why loading parts into the trunk would have caused a fuel leak, damn!

So if I recall correctly, my next challenge after assembling the engine will be to figure out how to install the IP correctly. I seem to recall there being a special locking tool that I was considering buying. Looking through the IP threads it seems that most folks already have an IP that is somewhat close to being timed and just needs to be tweaked. Anyhow, I'll keep reading, I'm sure the info is in here somewhere.

Oh and my flex disc markings seem to have been removed somehow, doh!

But wow, what a beautiful car, I can't wait to get to work on it.
