Honey, I cleaned our manifolds!

Just thought I'd put up the pics of my nicely cleaned up intake manifold and cleaned up and painted exhaust manifold.

Biodiesel soaking and a brass brush can do wonders. Power washed everything to get the most stubborn dirt out. Due to the EGR valve, there was about 2-3mm thick carbon layer in all of the intake ports. I had flakes of carbon that were inside there.

I thought from the title, you used the Dishwasher .

They sure look good. forget chroming them, get the Cerrmakromed. takes high heat, won`t turn blue, no rust problems like chrome. and looks good

get a set of 78 -79 W116 300SD manifolds, no EGR to block off.

Nice clean manifold, looks good. you will keep your hands clean as you put it back together.
Dice the EGR, you dont need the problems.

Have you started putting the motor back together yet?
What did you end up doing about the piston?

You should have seen my TDI's manifold before I did the EGR mod. I would wager that it was easily 35% + blocked... the stuff was just caked in there.

Yours looks great -- good work!

EGR is history; I got a block off plate and a round fitting to block the intake, on ebay. For testing purposes only, of course.

On the engine, I am still trying to convince myself to pull the balancer and pulley to replace the front seal.

As for the piston, I got one from one of the forum members, it should be here in a couple of days... did you say you also had a spare one? Did you measure it?

Make sure the piston is for a turbo motor. I believe they are slightly different from the NA pistons. The differences may not be easy to see.
If the front seal is not leaking at all, I would leave it. The last thing you want is to break that main holding bolt. Otherwise try the bolt, if its stuck, leave it.

Good luck!!

Nonsense!

Germans don't chrome manifolds. leave that to the mid-life-crisis americans with their muscle cars.
