I feel that Smash is in very good hands! Jim will pick up on all the routine stuff PDQ.
Wow, I'm not sure I could sleep at night until that MESS in the back of that wagon was cleaned up!! While some things don't look too terribly awful, that rear section is a scary place! Looks like it might have a water leak on that right hand side, but who can tell right now really.
Glad you got it home reasonably OK. Ahhh, the adventure begins. Nice job including pics. Lets see more of the inside......

Congratulations.

And welcome to the forum.

You will find everything you need right here. A lot of its members are very experienced and have some great advise.

After a good clean up, you'll have a better idea of what is really needed right away but it seems that you already have a good handle on your project.

I have no experience with WVO and know only what I have read in some threads.
However I would suggest you run the car on diesel only for a while and see how it's doing before using wvo.

I am with Jimmy L, let see some more pics of the inside.

Have fun.

more 1984 300TD wagon pics

I spent 30 min washing the rims and a doing quickie over the car. I ma all gun-ho to start working on things, but I just found out that I need leave tomorrow morning to run out of town for a week. So it will have to wait.

It is amazing what a tiny bit of soap and water will do for an old car. I still need to polish and wax the whole thing, then systematically start removing the interior to pressure wash all the carpet.

Here are some more pics.

dirty

clean

So that is how it will sit (except with the windows rolled up) until I get back and start tinkering. I found out today that the flaky musician previous owner installed a high-dollar sound system, and it really sounds great. The antenna is broken so the radio sounded really bad, but I popped in a CD, and the car just rocks. Yay music!

I also drove around some more today. I was cruising along and some woman on her cell phone pulled out in front of me in a late-90's Toyota Tercel. My first thought was, "Oh my God. I am going to crush that poor little car!" But to my utter amazement the old wagon tuckered down and screeched to a stop MUCH more quickly than I would have thought possible. The lady didn't even look up.... But she was almost my new hood ornament. Nevertheless, I was both thankful and impressed with the heavy old car's phenomenal stopping power.

So that is that for now. Unless I log in while traveling, good bye until next week.

peace and grease,
-steve

Very nice wagon, just needs a good cleaning, looks like it found the right home. Remove that WVO crap so you'll be able to drive it for many more years to come.

Keep us posted with updates.

Better looking car than what you were describing in the begining.

whether they are white walls or not, at least they are holding air for now.

we thumb our noses at white walls, but when I was a teenager, we couldn`t afford them. so we bought and installed Porta-walls.
Man were we stylin back then.

off topic, but have you ever seen an old school white wall wheel cutting device and procedure?

When I was in tech school, they brought in this guy who showed us how they used to install this cutting device, rotate the tire and cut a depression in the sidewall rubber of the tire, then apply the whitewall material. You could adjust and put just whatever you wanted for thickness as per the customers request. It was very interesting.

The thin band whitewall though I think detracts from the features of the rim and the lines of the body on these cars. They look much better with a blackwall, you should flip the tires on the rims to the black side.

Porta-walls, Sure, I remember those, they worked fine, couldn't tell the difference at a respectable distance.
I had a set on my VW bug a long while back
