Newbie question.

Hey folks! Just picked up a very nice '87 SDL. Dark gray, light gray interior. 135K on the clock. Everyting actually works, which is pretty amazing. I had a question about rocker switches on the dash.

I've got, six, not the five shown in the manual. The one I'm not familiar with, is directly to the right of the air recirculation switch. It's got a pic of a cone with a ball at the end of it. I've even looked at 300SDL's on Ebay just to see if any others had it. No luck. Any help identifying this mystery switch would be most appreciated.

Great board,BTW. I've been lurking for about a week. Got plenty of good info already! Cheers!

... the pic sounds like fog lights to me... but they are controlled by the headlight switch.
welcome to the forum!
now, you know you HAVE to post pics of both the switch panel, and your car.
it's a requirement of all new members and member's new vehicles!
get out your camera, and post up the pics!

Good question. After looking at the sales brochure for the 1987 S-Class, I see that the 560SEL and SEC has the 6th switch in the pictures. The 300SDL and 420 SEL does not. What ever that switch operates, was it optional in the 300 and 420?? My SDL has the standard 5 switches. My W126 service manual on CD has the owners manuals for 560s. I'll look it up tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Thanks for the responses. I'll get some pix up after work today. The car isn't a euro spec, so I guess it eliminates that. I've done google searches and not come up with anything. I've flipped the switch a couple of times nothing seems to happen. Well, at least it doesn't operate an ejection seat!

Check out the link. Could this be true? That switch changes the horn tone?

Thanks for the link, MI300SDL. I tried that it doesn't seem to change the tone of the horn and I don't have a rear shade, so that isn't it. I did take a couple of pix, so that maybe someone will recognize the switch and it's function. Thanks again!

That switch should change the tone of the horn, from the louder meeper horns that all the cars have, to the quieter trumpet horns that the 560s have. It looks like someone put the burlwood trim from a 560 into your 300SDL, along with the horn switch which is probably hooked up to nothing.

That would explain why it doesn't do anything. Well, at least it isn't the ejection seat button! Thanks!
