Big difference in vacuums
Wow, what a difference between the vacuum on the 85 Turbo D and the 83 240D 4 speed. The 240 has the big line to the vacuum brake unit, a yellow line for door locks and a brown line (in and out) for engine stop and that is about it. EGR is off both engines so that is gone. What other vacuum do I need to run the 617 in the 240 chassis. Do you think I should just forget the "blue space craft" thing a bob on the 85's front fender. And what about all those left over vacuum lines. Maybe I should just cook up some kind of Mercedes spaggetti, maybe adding in some old rubber for meat balls? Also, I found what looks like a balance point check mark on the flywheel. Hope I can find one on the end of the 617 crank and I will be good to go. I do plan on having a local machine shop make a ring for around that flywheel that will be a tight press fit and weigh about 10 lbs. I think the added weight will be good, so long as the price is decent. There is room for that added ring on the 240D engine and I would think that same space is available on the 617. Hope to pull the 617 tomorrow. Lots to do, maybe I can't get it done, about 3 hours out there wears me out to the bone! But I can do it and I have a young fellow helping me two days a week. The first engine I switched was in 1957. I had a 1955 AMC built Hudson Hornet. It was high mileage and was using oil. Then AMC ran an ad in the Milwaukee Journal, that it had a couple hundred brand new Hornet engines for sale at the Clement Ave Parts Warehouse,I think for $235.00, totally complete with plugs, distributor, dual carbs, starter, everything it took to stick it into a new car or in this case a used car. It was a very difficult job and I forget now how we got that big engine in there. I really think we got the front end up high enough to get over the engine and then slowly brought the engine up. We did not have an engine lift and really very few tools. It took a long time, just like this job is taking a long time. But that's OK, I am just aiming to get it all done by 4th of July

Sorry if it wasn't clear
Here is what I'm doing. Swapping that great 617 out of my 85 300D and putting it into a 240D with a 4 speed. I don't think I will replace or put in the two engine shocks.

then you can remove almost everything that is not already in the 240.
all that tubing and related 'valvery' for the air recirc valve on the turbo = gone egr valvery = gone the vacuum amplifier blue thingie from mars = gone (it only helps with the trans for that year(s)) cap off all the lines, re adjust routing with new connectors |
