cam shaft wear question
 

performed a valve adjustment on the 1984 300DT and inadvertently misadjusted the intake valves. plan to
go back in this weekend and set them correctly according to specs (.15 mm with engine hot). noticed a small space on a cam lobe where the shiny metal flaked off....about 1/4 inch. should I be worried about this? is it possible to repair? thanks!

Depends, too many variables to tell without seeing the lobe. You can have an individual lobe reground. I think the most important thing is it damaging the rocker face?

I would check that now and from time to time. If no issue is developing live with it. If the lobe is rough enough that the rocker is being damaged of course something should be done. Good used cams are still pretty common.

Remember though you also need the rockers that were on that used cam if required to be placed on the same lobes on a used cam when you install it. They wear to accomidate the individual lobe to rocker interface in an individual way. You want to maintain that exact same pattern.

I did that with my daughters 240D, got the cam, rockers and all, no worries:P the parts have "worked together" The PO of that car was an big time Amsoil salesman, BUT he hadn't adjusted the valves for YEARS, ware nasty groves in a couple lobes.

forward with the current cam and check it for wear in
around 10,000 miles. if it looks to be a problem at that time, I will then need some help. thanks again!
