Rear wiper motor won't quit grinding

Every now and then when I start the car the rear wiper motor turns on and makes a grinding racket. The buttons on the dash are not turned on and the wiper is not turning. Sometimes I can get it to turn off by turning the blade but this time I could not get it to quit. Luckily I only had a short drive back to the office. Is there some way to shut that thing off so it doesn't make so much noise and probably burn the motor out?

open the rear hatch interior panel and there is an electronic plug that goes into the motor. pull that and your motor will be disconnected.

Thanks, I'll do that this weekend. For now I just pulled the fuse in the panel.

If you want to do a quick troubleshoot, remove the wiper arm and see if the spindle finds home without grinding. If it does, reinstall the arm where it normally should sit on the window, probably "advanced" a little on the spindle from where it was. Wear may have disturbed the correct position of the little "timing" disk inside the motor and gear housing.

You may have to pull the assembly (motor and gear housing) if things inside have gotten loose or worn. It's common for the constant slamming of the hatch to cause the screws that hold the housing cover to loosen or fall out. There is also a screw on the inside that will jamb the mechanism if it loosens/falls out. It's a simple mechanism--things should be pretty obvious once you take it apart.

Mine (85td) did not have screws. I had metal pins, which caused the motor case/housing to open up when the gears were under load, resulting in skipping gears. That was the reason my motor didn't work. Design flaw?

I ended up threading the existing holes, and used machine screws to tighten the case together in order to keep the gears in contact when under peak loads. Problem solved.

Byronnash, I would check the rear wiper switch too, but i'm wondering if this is your problem with the rear wiper motor. The grinding noise is probably the motor's gears not making full contact.
