W124 Steering wheel moves on its own -- guess what it is

I have a new problem on my 1993 W124. It just noticed it slowly creeping up last week. Now its real noticeable. Incidentally it's an old problem on my 1998 VW Jetta.

Driving slowly, the steering wheel will move on its own. You can take your hands off it and watch it move to left and right an inch or so. At high speeds it feels a bit squirrely.

Anyone want to take a shot at what this is? Idler arm maybe?

Check the tires too. Probably worn out badly.

Broken tire belt. If the steering wheel wobbles back and forth at very low speed. Try the spare tire on one front side. If that does not do it move the spare to the other front side.

Take it for a drive on a rough road as fast as you can. When the tire blows, the problem will go away!! Its a failing tire!! Or an egg shaped rim. Have you hit the curb hard lately? When you find the lump on your tire or the rim damage, please post a pic for the benefit of others.

I did have a tire blow last week and changed to spare. Spare tire is best tire on car. And its in front right. Tires are pretty bad on this car. Dry rotted.

Also, a field mouse ran out from under car as i left this morning. Car seemed to drive a bit better. But could have been psychological.

The jetta tires are not that old but are getting close to their wear limit.

i'll let you know what i find. A squirrel broke into the car a month ago too. Maybe had babies in there.
