Air Filter and Oil filter Preferences
 

I just received a hand me down 1983 300D turbo that was purchased brand new in 1983 by my Grandmother...now has 170,000.

It is in IMMACULATE shape..not a dent and beautiful silver..I am changing oil and air filter for the first time..and wonder what eveyones preference is on the filters..I have always been a NAPA guy so I bought the top of the line Napa Brand Gold filter for both...

Also any advise on oil--I live in N. Georgia so it does not get cold for long..

Use OEM filters. Aftermarket filters could cost more. You can order from this Website. The brands are Mann, Knecht, and Hengst.

I agree with Bo. I use Mann air filter and Hengst oil filter. Use the names in his post. Any others might "upset" your car. And WELCOME to the wonderful world of MB Diesel ownership.. you'll really enjoy it!

I use a K&N air filter. Seems to work well with my turbo boost controller which requires a slightly greater air flow.

I love my Benz dearly and paid the price for a K&N filter.
It makes me happy so I know my Benz is happy because the average mileage is over 30mpg and on a recent trip around New England it averaged 32.4mpg. So to steal a line from Rambler.

Hengst or Mann are the two most common OEM filters. I prefer the Hengst. The plastic container/gasket on the Hengst filter is much more pliable, and I feel that it makes for a better seal with the air cleaner and lid. I recently ordered an Amsoil foam oil bath filter, on a recommendation from a fellow diesel devotee. It is supposed to increase performance, keep the engine cleaner, cure the common cold, etc... Well, we'll see.

I've been using Mann filters for oil and air. And I have a supply of Mann fuel filters for the W123. Just put a Bosch fuel filter on the W124 because I needed it quickly and FastLane had those.

I'd like to relate what I found on changing the W124 air filter. It looked fairly clean on initial inspection, but on the diesels of that series its a big square thing - very deep channels. So when I pried apart a few of the folds in the filter all kinds of stuff started falling out.

Anyway, I got the new Mann filter and had the old Hengst by it. I noticed the Mann said "Made in Germany" and the old Hengst said "Made in WEST Germany" (my emphasis). So I started laughing and thinking about just how old that filter must have been!

Let's see, the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. I forget how long after that the sides merged, maybe five years?

On my '82 300D Turbo I use Mann oil filters, which are actually cheaper then any aftermarket alternative. I usually use Fram air filters but I bought a Mann last week which I'll install tomorrow. The Mann air filter looks like it's superior to the Fram, but for $41.80 CDN it better be.
