Another Check Engine/Glow plug light question

I did the search and read the articles - I have a check engine light and glow plug light on in the '99E300TD. The plug lights up and then goes off and comes back on with the CE light when the car starts. I could not find the answer to 2 questions I have though...

Is the '99 an ODBII and can my local garage read the codes?
Are the glow plugs still on while driving?

Thanks!

Yes and no.

ODBII will tell you if a GP is out and some say if two are out which pair. It is just as easy to check at the GP relay and test the resistance on each GP. Relay is located on the drivers fender in front of the ABS pump. Unplug it and test; any one that is greater than .06 ohm is probably bad. Now the GP #s on the plug are really really small, but they are there.

AFAIK the GPs on the OM606 do have after glow but dont heat when driving.

Excellent - thanks! My 16 year old just her license yesterday and I want her to drive the rusted, dent covered '99 E300 and not my pristine '95 E300D. I'll tell her to ignore all the pretty Christmas tree lights on the instrument cluster
