This mainly seems be an 'automatic' affliction.
My first stickshift 240D had a bad vibration due to completely collapsed motor-mounts - cured with new ones. Otherwise, the idle of all my stickshift diesels has been quite tolerable.
But my automatic 240D still vibrates pretty bad unless I shift into neutral or park.
Not sure if other things besides motor-mounts could account for the problem. I still suspect my bent front crossmember. I will check the engine-shock mountings.
Could old, hardened flex-discs transmit vibrations through the driveshaft, to old, hardened diff/subframe mounts?
My automatic 240D just isn't worth throwing more parts/money at this problem.

Happy Motoring, Mark

My '77 240D is the same. I did a compression test which came back showing all of the cylinders being in pretty good shape (above 300) but the first cylinder was at about 310 while the 3 others were all at about 370-380. I think that is a wide enough range between the first cylinder and the others to account for rough idle.

In your case only. Remove the return line from the injection pump and see if the injection pump is overflowing at idle. If not you have a problem. If it is overflowing close off the return Line. Idle under load better?

I will check this thread again in the next few days. Low fuel supply pressure is a possibility. Your compression numbers tend to indicate this engine may have been run for a very long time at some point in it's life with poor fuel pressure. This can be caused by simple things like not changing the fuel filters often enough. Weak relief valve or worn lift pump are not unusual either.
