Should I ??? '82 300SD knocking

I found this ad and would consider this at $500 he wants.

"For sale a 1982 Mercedes 300SD Turbo Diesel with about 240k miles. European headlights, chrome Mercedes rims, chrome trim, sheepskin seat covers, sunroof, etc.... Car runs but makes a knocking sound and am told it probably needs a new engine. I am selling this as a parts car or it can be repaired. I was told this could be done for around $1,700. Asking $500 obo. Lowered price because I need to have the car sold by the end of the week. Car is sold as is."

I have not looked at it yet... afraid I will buy it without asking. :o

opinions?
Scott

Maybe it does, an in-person inspection would help confirm that.

If you like what you see just count on having to replace the engine and factor that in. You might get lucky but never count on it very much. That way if you do it feels great. Chances are if he states it needs an engine it probably does.

Go look at it with only $400 on you! That way you will need to look long & hard so you will have some bargaining points to get the price down.

euro headlights, are expensive, and desirable.
true sheepskins, protect leather seats, so you could have a very good set of seats, figure the engine as totaled, and plan to swap in a used one easy to do, and pretty simple to get. well worth 500.00

figure you are going to need oil cooler lines, and a replacement engine. how is the body? rust? leaks? windshield? sunroof?
where is it located? near you? near me? I might be persuaded to make a trip that far for a decent vehicle needing just an engine.

I think I will be passing this time. Really need to put $$ in the 2 I already have. :o Especially since I think my axles just crapped on Monday in the '85 on my way home. Spares are handy. :D

This is the ad if anybody is interested.

Hmmmm do I need a third SD parts car... ick, chrome eyebrows... but those headlights... and oh, what I'd give for a set of nice palomino seats.

$400 is approaching the salvage metal price. Too far & wrong color or I'd hit it. We throw away perfectly good rust free cars just because they need an engine. Friends on Z car forums would kill to be able to start with what we consider trash.

In about 20 hours, you can pull $2,000 worth of parts off that car.

Knocking, could be any number of things. Is it driveable? Could be "nailing" due to an injector.

Could also be a lose rod,,,

Folks, you are so not helping. ;) I am sooo tempted to go see it but I know I am liable to bring it home with me like a cute puppy.

smitherz 04-29-2010 09:12 PM

Sold.

I just sent and got a response from Dominick that the car was sold. :( Well, at least I won't have to make the decision.

there are 3 126 just arrived at the pull apart with decent interiors. two additional have tex interiors. maroon leather, palomino interior and grey.
plenty of additional parts available, three 420's two 300's etc. I'm making a trip in the morning to get a differential, and an interior *the palomino is mine* plenty of good parts if anybody wants me to pile on.
I think the place charges 100 for the entire interior.
taking orders.
