1979 240D window issues

Hey guys first time posting on this website, i am also over on powerstroke.org to get help when needed for my truck.... anyway i can not roll my windows up or down. I have a haynes tech manual, and have a few questions.

1. Where is the "relay window lift" located on the car.

2. Going by the wiring diagram power goes from there to the fuse box to terminal a and terminal b. Would i get power to those points at all times when the ignition is on or only when the window button is pressed.

3. I plan to put on a small turbo (it will be comming of a 4 cyl diesel tractor) pending some custom intake and exhaust manifold modifications. When i was pulling the intake manifold off i noticed a whole lot of oil in the intake which is coming fron the top of the valve cover. Is there a way to stop this oil pressure from coming out of the valve cover? Other than block the hole up.

616 is not internally designed for a turbo, no oil jets and whatnot, but a number of people have done it, so that should work. Id personally leave it alone and move to a turbo 617 for fun though since its A, more powerful to begin with, and B, internally ready for boost in various forms. Or watch the 616 like a hawk during turbo service.

Lots of oil blowing out the top could be blow by, maybe just a valve adjustment. There are a number of threads on checking the blowby.

Not sure where the window relay as they describe it is, but 99 percent of the time, its the switches themselves that are bad. too much coffee spilled on them over the years.

I usually just check the fuse, then check the wiring to the motor from the switch for continuity, check that the switch is getting power, directly power the motor to see if the window goes up and down, and then once Ive proved to myself its the switch, I replace it and call it a day. Bad news is that the switches are 40-60 bucks.

I just check the voltage at the fuse block and am not getting voltage to either a or b so that points me away from the switches toward the relay but that haynes doesnt show a picture...

The turbo thing will be relitively easy... seeing as how the turbo is relitively small and will be comming off a Duetz 4cyl diesel engine. It will take an oil supply line and an oil return line. And some modifications... you got your self a turbo 240D...

Well the Windows worked fine when my dad bought it in '05. I drove it tilli joined the military between then and about a year ago, when my mom was driving it to and from work, all the windows stoped working at the same time...

This is one of my Window Fuses.
The next time I had a Window Problem I took apart the switches and this is what I found.
On mine the Window Relay is behind the Instrument Cluster. However, there is at least 3 Ralays there. I would put my hand on the Relay and press a Window Switch and try to feel which Relay it is.

However, so far I cannot remember anyone fixing their Widow Problems due to a bad Relay. It has always been the Switches, Fuses or an issue with the Window Regulators.

Was the Ignition Key on when you tested the Voltage. I do not think the Windows get juice until the key is on.

If you already have blow by installing a Turbo will rcreate more pressure in the Cylinders and I believe this will result in more blow by if the blow by is because of worn Clinders/Pistons/Rings.

You are also the first one to mention the Oil Supply Issue. The real Turbo Engines have an entirely different and much larger Oil Pump (large enough that it is not driven by a shaft but by a Chain and Sprocket on the Crank Shaft) that puts out a huge volume of Oil. Diverting some of the Oil to the Turbo might cause some Oil starvation issues at hot idle.

there is a very well done thread here about how to clean the switches out. if you got voltage at the switches, clean those puppies out. its very easy, just be careful not to drop any of the little pieces. it worked for me.
