1980 300SD - All Electricals Quit Today

Aloha,

I was driving along and everything was fine... radio playing, a/c blowing, turn signals working, windows going up and down, etc. Then, the radio stops, and shortly after that the a/c stops blowing. I go to put the windows down, and they go down, but very slowly. So I pull into a shady spot, pop the hood, and check the fuses. Everything looks good. I go to start the car, and it's completely dead - no turning over, no lights on the dash, nothing.

I get a jump from someone nearby, and the car starts up right away, but still, none of the electricals work... no turn signals, no radio, no a'c, no window motors, nothing.

When I get home, with the car still rinning, I connect the battery charger. All of the electricals come back on. I disconnect the charger, and all of themm go off again.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

I know somebody here can be more accurate.

But your test tells me a few things.

The engine needs no electricity to run.
It would seem the battery has been drained to nothing.
The batery may still be good, and if you were to charge it completely
probably would get a couple days out of it.

I know this because recently I was having trouble and could go three days on a charge before total dead.

My theory is electricity is not making it from the alternator to the battery.
Several possibilities.

From easiest to worst:
1. Voltage regulator on back of alternator needs to be replaced.
(not sure how to test for this).
2. Alternator needs complete replacement.
3. Wires from alternator back to battery is bad.

Tell us how many miles (if it is not in your signature) and if any of
these parts have been replaced - alternator, voltage regulator.
Anything else you can think of.

If you are lucky it is no more than an alternator.

Charge it up and see if it acts normal.
That would be a good indication that you need only repair the charging system.

Alternator, the alternator quit and while you were driving with blower on radio you drained out the power in the battery causing the electrical stuff to not work. Your engine don't use any electricity while running, only time power is used in the engine compartment is when your glow plug is warming up. This is one great thing about old diesel engines, you can still drive even theres no power.

Check for loose fan belt first of all. You should not be able to turn the alternators fan by hand. I suspect this if the red light on the dash was not lit showing no charging.

On the otherhand a fault may have developed in a fashion the alternator light did not activate.

Many thanks to all!

Went after the voltage regulator first. Very easy job - took one minute, if that. The two pins were so worn that they were almost invisible. Called the parts store... they had one in stock (which is a big deal in my little town). Bought it, brought it home, installed it, test drove the car, everything is now working perfectly. Praise the Lord!

Aloha!
