Fixing a bad not working window motor
Sorry I did not take pictures. I know how mportant they are.
I was all set to order a replacement motor for my 1983 300SD drivers window when I discovered that it could be made to work by simply putting a shim/spacer between motor and gearhead. The window stopped working. After testing that electricity and switch were operating properly. I had to remove the motor from the gearhead. Two T20 torx screws hold motor to gearhead. Then I had to unscrew the motor from gearhead ( I thought I had broken it while unscrewing). Then removed regulator from door to get gearhead off. This is where the accident happened. On a lark I loosely attached motor to gearhead - loosely , and applied power using a battery charger. The motor spun fine both directions. Thinking all it needed was to be lubed I reassembled everything and the motor failed to spin. When I cracked the T20 torx screws a turn or two the motor worked fine. I tried lossening a screw on the gearhead that looks to hold the motor shaft in, but it had been crimped and would not move. So I shimmed the motor away from gearhead with about 1/16 inch layer of material (you could use rubber, cardboard, sliver of wood, even a metal washer). Reassembled and the motor operates the regulator fine. My only regret is not sealing the gap with silicone between motor and gearhead. I lubed everything on the regulator, replaced the single sliding jaw, reinstalled. Hope this helps anybody who may be able to save a few bucks getting a motor to work again.
