Did i get a valve job or what?
I'm busy gutting the bathroom & don't have much time to do anything else, deadline 12/31/01. So i took my wife's baby to the Little Garage in Queens,NY for an inspection & valve job. The inspect was $10, the gasket was $10.50. My bill I thought would be under $100, not! Try $196.27! I am going to buy those special wrenches & do it myself next time, !@#$%^&*(.
I'm mad at the bill, the work was well done. I just don't like parting w/hard earned cash that much! Happy Holidays to All May your faith preserve you & your loved ones! |

Gee. I didn't know being my own Mercedes diesel mechanic paid so well! I must have gotten a raise recently. :)
Haven't done this task yet, but I did find the tools fairly cheaply on EBay. From what I understand, for the most part you only need two curved 14mm wrenches - and not the other funny looking special wrench that apparently holds the valve spring. Do a search on "Mercedes Diesel" on EBay Motors parts, and look for Unimog valve wrenches or something like that. The seller puts a pair of wrenches up every week or so - something like $25. Most of the time I get by with the two 14MM wrenches, occasionally I really need the large one that fits the retainer.
Good luck, |
valve wrenches
I took two cheap 14mm wrenches to a torch the beat them with a hammer to get the 45 degree angle I needed. Total investment: $3.00 and twenty minutes of my time. Make sure you temper them in cold water after heating.

wrenches
are the special 14mm wrenches for all mercedes, or just the diesels? I am thinking about adjusting the valves on my 1985 280e.

i must say it again: i had NO problems using my standard wrenches (unmodified at that).

Hmmmmm. that's almost twenty dollars per valve,be glad you don't have a V 12.......
