Turn signal repair 1981 240d

My turn signals would not 'flash'. Emergency flashers would not 'flash'.
I had to manually flip the turn signal switch up and down to get the signals to work.

If your signals/flashers are totally inoperable this will not help.

The flasher/switch unit for this model (and others) is either unavailable or
cost a small fortune.

I was able to utilize a 'cheapie' flasher unit from a 1988 Plymouth to get the
turn signals working properly.

Due to the circuitry inside the original flasher/switch this does not behave as it should.

To work the 4 way flashers the ignition needs to be 'on' and I have to turn on
the left or right blinker. Good enough for a state inspection or emergency.

You'll need -
wire cutters,
pliers,
a short piece of wire 4 or 6" (I cut one off an old extension cord),
black tape,
'Female Disconnect'?? (NAPA # 784351or similar to connect to the new flasher),
wire caps,
a volt/ohmeter to double check your work.

Sorry, I don't own a camera.

As follows - Remove the ashtray. Remove 2 screws in the ashtray bracket. Do not remove
the bracket, just keep it real loose.

Slide back and pull up the cover, carefully raise as little as possible. Pull off the sockets
connecting the flasher unit and the speaker control.

Remove the flasher unit and turn it upside down to see the numbers on the bottom.

After cutting each wire use the ohmeter to make sure you cut the right one. The numbers
on the flasher will correspond to the socket Remember it is upside down and the socket numbers
will be reverse..

Do not cut the wires too close to the flasher socket, you may need them in the future.

Basically what I did was connect the flasher between wires #15 (hot) and 49a (4 way switch) while disconnecting #30 and #15 from the factory unit.

Cut wire #30 Red & white - This is always 'hot'. Cap the ends. It will not be used.

Cut wire #15 Black, Green & Red - This is 'hot' when the ignition is on.
Cap the end going into the flasher socket. Strip off some plastic on the end coming
from the dashboard area and attach a 'Female Disconnect' to attach the new flasher.

Cut wire #49a Black, Green & White - Strip some plastic off both ends.
This is being cut ONLY to allow some extra room to position the new flasher.
Attach your short wire (4 - 6") to the end coming from the Flasher socket.
Reconnect the other end of the short wire to the Black, Green & White that was cut.
Use 'Female Disconnect' to attach the new flasher.

Attach your flasher, turn on the ignition and test.
Put the original flasher back into the socket and test the emergency flashers (ignition on
and turn signal on)

Hope this helps.
