84 190 d cooling system wiring diagrams

I am at a bit of a standstill on a 190d I am working on. The engine fan clutch(electric) comes on as soon as you start the vehicle. It has a new electric clutch and termperature switch on the engine block. Another side note is that a previous owner jumped a wire from the temp switch to the high pressure switch on the dryer. It looks like the drier switch is bad. But when everything is connected, the engine fan and aux fans come on automatically. These fans should not start to operate until the car is heated up to around 100 degrees from what I understand. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of these two systems?(engine clutch fan and a/c sensors) I need to know what other components are used in these circuits. Thanks!

190D Wiring Diagrams

I am not sure if my original chilton's manual that I had for my '84 190D has the correct wiring diagram, but I do know there are major diffs between the 84 and the 85 model. So, be careful to get the exact one. Apparently the switch mounted on or near the back firewall (rt side) of the engine compartment would self-destruct and mine almost burned down the car at Shakleford's, except he was working on the car's AC conversion at the time, smelled the smoke from the burning switch and wiring, and stopped it from causing a fire. He explained that that was a common problem and had to repair some of the wiring, and re-wire it to the 85 specs, replacing the connector/switch with a new one for an '85.

I will hunt around for the manual, in case it does have the wiring diagram. However, I think if you hunt though the forums resources, you should find one provided by other contributors. In the event that you are unable to find it here, PM me and I'll try to find one in my books I have on hand. And if I do, have a fax number handy, or an email address for me to copy and send to you. I would imagine it will be difficult at best to follow from a scanned copy of it.

Another resource would be the 1-800 Mercedes phone line, where a tech will be happy to give you instructions on how to track it down.

Electric clutch? What electric clutch?

There shouldn't be one, they come with a mechanical visco clutch, which normally spin all the time. When this kicks on at 90c it spins the fan alot faster and noiser than usual.

As for the aux fan from what I can remember from the diagram it might go all the way to the climate control unit and back again (sensors -> unit -> fan).

84 190D comes with an electric clutch fan. It is activated by a sensor on the engine block. The sensor makes at temperature and grounds the connector to chassis. It turns on the clutch fan.

I use a Haynes manual ( gas model ) to trouble shoot my car's electric. It differs very little from the diesel model.
