depending on what is wrong, they are easily fixed. If you hear it grinding, chances are you can fix it.

It's almost always just the three screws that secure the motor falling out.

My W123 300TDT is in 'rear wiper assembly is Inop' status. When activating the switch I hear a relay clicking...but no wipee action.

So I cant resist: Assuming this is like a "bird in the hand two in the bush" scenario.....
what is a rear wiper motor on the hatch worth?
I dunno, is it worth more off the hatch? What if it were a front wiper motor on a hatch?
The possibilities....

i would check i out, becuase its still possible that the gears are binding and not allowing the wiper to move. It could be jammed.

the gear housing doesn't have screws, they have pins. The screws are there for the wiper arms, which attach to the gears. the grease they pack the gears with it made its way to those pins on mine, which allowed the case to open up when the gears were under load, causing the gears to skip and grind on the worm gear from the motor. I threaded the holes for the pins, and replaced them with machine screws. Problem was solved. Its a strange design IMO. I wonder how many of the wiper motors have failed because of this reason when there is such an easy fix.

My '81 wagon definitely has screws. I remember re-tapping one to SAE when I couldn't find the missing screw and couldn't justify a 20 mile trip to the hardware store.

I was hoping to just "edit" and copy and paste that here, but I guess there is a time limit on when we can go back and edit an old post......

Thanks for taking the pics, Jimmy!!! And finding your thread. I found a wagon for sale less than 100 miles from where I live and the paint is original. Naturally, I have my hands too full.....what would I do with a wagon?

Question: Did you use Loctite on those screws or a lock washer if its a bolt?

Hey those look familiar! I used those last summer to help me out. feel free to edit anything you can replace with better terms I have quotation marks arounnd.

In those pics however, you cannot see the gearhousing. To get to it you have unbolt those two main bolts and the whole unit will fall out. You will have to disconnect the plug too. Then unscrew the philips head screws, then unbolt the 2 bolts very close to each other on the main linkage, seen in pics, it will allow you to pull it away from the "linkage housing" through the center cutout. you will be left with the motor attached to the gear housing.
