1982 300TD -- Up and Running, but only for short trips

Continued from 1982 300TD -- New to me after sitting ~10 years -- What to fix first?

I got the car up and running now. It's great for running around town. Starts right up with no smoke. But once I start going I run into some issues.
  • Current maxiumum speed is about 40MPH
  • When floored on highway I get about 3K max RPM
  • Once the car is warmed up it's very smoky
  • Vacuum is only at 10-15hg when measured at the brake booster

I assume these issues are due to the maintenance I've performed. They didn't exist on the 450 mile drive home. Here's a list of relevant repairs since bringing the car home. Is there anything on this list that could cause the issues I'm currently experiencing?

My SLS tank was full of black oil (hopefully old FEBI and not motor oil). I topped it off with some fresh fluid but I don't see it being pumped when the car is running. Is it possible that the SLS pump is leaking into the engine causing the smoke?

In keeping with my love of lists, here's what my current plan of action is. Does this sound like a good plan?
  • Rebuild the SLS pump
  • Check vacuum pump to see if it's dumping motor oil in the motor through the intake
  • Crack one injector at the time and rev the motor, looking to find which one stops the smoke
  • Double check throttle linkage lengths using this post
  • Adjust the bowden cable

I also plan to drop and clean the tank once I run out of fuel, but I don't think bad fuel is the issue. Yesterday I tried swapping the fuel lines to see if I'd get less smoke and it didn't make a difference.

As always, I apologize for the length of my post. I know there's a lot of questions here and I appreciate you helping if you can.

40 eh? it sounds like you have loose throttle connections. have someone step on the pedal, and see if the accelerator linkage bottoms the IP. if not, start there.
it also sounds like you have no fuel boost with the turbo, or the wastegate is stuck open. look for the boost hose, to be melted. *it's not a good idea to replace it with fuel hose... use high temp hose designed for the task.*
last is the alda hose and alda itself. verify they are clean.
I just pulled my 83 TD out of the weeds and got it running after sitting for god only knows how long. running great, but brake and handling issues to go.

My gf didn't work this weekend so we spent it gardening.

I did have an hour to double check my valve adjustment and found several were looser than they should have been. I blame it on the fact that it was my first valve adjustment.

After the adjustment I measured my throttle linkages and started the car up to see if they were bottoming out at the IP. I heard liquid bubbling and noticed that I had a pretty big oil leak coming from the back of the valve cover. I stopped the engine in time, but I'm going to have to see what I did wrong. Hopefully I didn't ruin the gasket and there's just some tubing stuck under it.

So yeah, that put me in a bad mood for a few days. I plan to figure out what's what this evening.

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know what I find.

Video of the engine running while the car is parked.

Acceleration video (I think I fixed the issue, I ran out of road and it seemed like it would go faster):

that is soooo weird to watch!
how did you get the car to drive on the wall?
notice how the tach sits at 2K from 30 to 40ish MPH... strange.
probably just not accelerating much at that point.
ya need to floor it from a stop on camera *(any chance you can rotate the camera?) and see what it pulls from a stop!

I'll go find a quieter stretch of road tomorrow and film a video that doesn't make you tilt your head

I've been busy with other parts of the car but I'll be revisting this in a day or two. Can someone please confirm that the boost hose mentioned above is #53 in this diagram?
