But they really are off a Diesel...Honestly Bill..

I know this really isn't a Diesel topic but considering our "Honorable Forum Monitor" is in the trucking business I figured he'd see it here first (and sooner). So here goes.....

Bill
I had a week long class in Bakersfield the beginning of November, so I took a set of stock alloy wheels for my 80 300 CD along and dropped them off to be polished. The gal that took them told me that it would take a couple of days to do them. Well two days in the stripping vat didn't even touch the original coating. They claim that the new chemicals that the EPA requires them to use takes longer and it was the first time they used it. So she said she would have to FedEx or UPS them to me, but on second thought, they would arrive in better shape if they shipped them by freight (only a couple of bucks more). So after two weeks in the vat and a week of polishing, she calls to say I should get them on Monday. Monday afternoon the freight company calls and says they had three vans broken into over the weekend and my wheels were stolen.

The freight company is sending me the claim forms. The gent I talked to said I should make the price of the wheels high enough to cover my time for shopping for wheels and the running around for packing materials and what ever else is involved. What do you think they are going to pay for? Are they going to allow for the price of used wheels that could range from $15 to $75 or will they go for new ones that MB quotes at $575?

Anyway I realize there may be a difference in how companies handle this but you may have some idea of what I may be in for and can give me a tip or two.

Thanks Bill

Ernie

Sorry to hear that bill

I was laid off myself, the 14th will be my last day.
This is the second time in two years for me. It's not all that bad, gives you time to do alot of little things around the house. Myself, I'm going to fix the heater/AC in the 300SD once and for all!
P.S. I was in the transportation business myself.
Good luck!

Thanks Bill,

Well you see it doesn't take much to put things into perspective. That last bit of news made me realize just how important those wheels are (not). But then I see you and drivesme have the right attitude, so already I'm feeling better. My daughter was working for a trucking company (Viking) and things got slow and they started cutting every ones time. So she drug up (not drugs, that's old timer construction talk for quit), packed up and left San Jose and headed for Fresno. Now she's beating the bush looking for something new. I wish you both all the luck!

drivesme,
I just replaced the climate control in my 81 300 SD. If I can help, let me know.

Thanks for the good words.
It's all in the attitude!
My heater works sometime's other times I just get heat from the Def. with no blower. When it works with the blower the heat is luke warm at best.
I'm thinking that it might be vacuume lines and maybe the temp. sensor? I'm not real clear on what the mono valve does or should do. I did find a wire plug on it that wasn't pluged in, but that didn't do anything The A/C compressor is not working, in fact the belt has been removed. Would that make a differance? Is that really a GM part?
I got myself a mity-vac for the lines but can you just buy new lines by the foot or do you have to know which line to ask for at the parts dept.? Also do they have to be the hard lines or can you replace them with standard stuff?
Sorry about all the ?? but this is my first MB and the learning curve is a little flat right now!

I thought that I may have had a vacuum problem too, I connected the mighty vac to a plastic line that tees off the big black line going to the brake booster thingie. When I pulled the line out to make the connection, I could hear air being sucked in, good sign that things were probably holding, being that the car hadn't run for about a week. After I connected the mighty vac and pumped till I was blue in the face, I had about 16" and watched it long enough to know there were no leaks. So I gave up on the vacuum being the problem and headed for the climate control. I took it out and popped the bottom cover off and there was an area or two that looked a little iffie. I retraced every solder trac with a hot soldering iron, put it back in and it still wouldn't open and close the vacuum actuators. I popped in a climate control that I got at a wrecking yard and every thing works with the exception of the register in the tail end of the console that blows to the back seat. I also checked to see if the tiny vent in the center of the dash was drawing air and it wasn't. I replaced the section of foam junk that connects the vent to the plastic tube. Now it draws air. I don't know how much either repair helped with my problems but I now have heat where it should be according to what button is pushed. And now the temp is matched to all positions of the red , white and blue areas of the dial. Before I had either full cool or full heat and nothing in between.
I had fan problems on my 190E and it turned out to be an intermittent short in the fuse panel. Try changing the fan fuse, even if it looks good.
If you find that you need to replace some vacuum lines, I'd go with the same thing that's there now, it's good stuff and you'll know it's the correct size for good fit and no leaks.
I'm sure you've checked the coolant temp to assure that there's enough temp to give you heat??
I can't help on the mono valve, do a search, I'm sure you'll find plenty.
If you decide to go after the climate control, I'll link you to a thread on taking the panel out and throw in my two cents.
Good luck,

Ernie

Tryed the fuse

I got the fan to work! The heat is still luke warm
no matter how long I drive, so I don't know what the deal is there. I think I have some vac. leaks.
I've hooked up the mity-vac to the same place that you did and it leaks down to about 1". Also it shifts hard and I get air coming out of every vent
no matter what button I push.
I will have to go to the dealer and get some replacment lines and start tracking them down.
Send me that link on how to open the dash.
Thanks for help! everyone on this board is just great!!

I was going over the climate info I printed from the CD rom on the W123. From what I could understand about the monovalve, it gets 12 volts to one wire and then the control is by the amount of ground it gets to the other wire, when it gets full ground its completely closed. Without ground the valve it always open. So that makes it fail safe so you will always have defrost. I don't know how the piping is laid out but maybe you can trace it out and figure it out yourself. If I remember right, there was a thread on the repair of the monovalve and there are internal parts available.

Heres the link to getting the wood off to get to the climate control. center console wood removal-the how too(w126). The toughest part for me was getting the ash tray to give up it's death grip, and then once it's out I'll be darn if I could tell what was holding it in. Once it's out, you'll see a couple of little tabs about an inch in on the bottom edge of the radio, push them both down and that releases the radio, and if you can snake your hand under the ash tray lower bracket and reach the back of the radio and push it out.
I removed all the switches above the climate control but now I think you can get the climate control out by leaving the switches in the wood panel and just swinging it up and out of the way once the two screws are out of the bottom.
Go for Bills hunch first and see what's up with the monovalve. Let us know how it's going.

It's an 82

I think that it is a W123 ( I know I need to post this info but some times my fingers go faster than my brain )
I will give the mono valve a try. I'll order the repair kit and let you know what happens.
Thanks for all the help and the link to the dash. :p

Ordered the parts

Thanks Bill,
I do have a W126, my mistake.
I just ordered the parts from Fastlane. My first order with them but I'm sure it will be fine.
I sure hope that does the trick.
I still have air coming out of every vent, would that be a vac. problem?

Air vents

Bill,
I get air out of all (even the center vents are warm air) the vents no matter what button is pushed, most of the air comes out of the def. however. I can live with this for now as long as I get more heat from the mono valve.

It's just like me to own a car that does freeky things that no one else's does!!!
Good luck on the job interview!!
That would be a great job, I'm working on getting a job at the FAA, should be cool if I get it.
Isn't job hunting fun???
