Brake Master Cylinder gotcha
This weekend I attempted to replace a leaky MC.
Basically, I cross threaded one fastening bolt and ruined the bolt and the new MC. That's another $150 or so paid to the DIY tuition gods. I already know what will fail next. With a new MC, the old calipers will start leaking. Old cars! Still cheaper than one new car payment though so I'm not complaining too much.

Well, I have yet to do it to a Master Cylinder itself, but did it to one of my Motor Mounts and have done it on other things over the years.
I believe at least twice I started to cross thread the Master Cylinder Line fittings but stopped before I ruined them completely. (It seems like it happend when I was in a hurry and also because I did not try to get the threads started by hand first (if possible).) The only thing that is worse is paying someone else a lot of money to strip them for you and not finding out until later.

always start threads by hand; if you must use a wrench, hold it w/ 2 fingers so you can't put enough torque to damage anything. i'd rather spend 1/2 hour on one bolt than ruin it. in the long run it will save time to take your time.

Best way to start a thread is to push lightly on the screw or nut and turn it backwards till you feel it drop on.
