2.47 Speedo for W116:

Just curious.....

I think I found a 2.47:1 differential, but need a speedo calibrated for the axle. Are these tough to find???? Car will do over 115mph flat out with the 3.07:1 axle, but I want less cruising rpm @ 70mph.

I'll bet you can find a SEL 450 or so and pull it.
rare but possible...

I have 2 W116 instrument clusters. One from a 73 450SE and one from a 1980 450SEL.

No idea if either is the one you are looking for.

Apparently,

There is a cable count 'code' on the back of the cluster that gives some indication as to what axle ratio the unit is calibrated for...Robert

If you really get desperate, I know there are mechanical signal to electrical converters for the speedometer. You could take the original mechanical signal, run it through the electrical converter and put a speedometer from an 81-85 SD in there (which is electric). Of course you would need to calibrate the unit read the correct speeds. I believe they cost around $100. Probably not the cheapest or simplest route, but an option if you can't find a 2.47 mechanical speedometer. I believe Carleton knows about the signal converters.

2.47 speedometer

I just let one slip thru my fingers.....it went to the scrape yard on Tuesday.

The R107 and W116 used interchangeable speedometers for some years. The 380SL, 380SLC and 560SL all had 2.47 rear ends. A speedometer from one of those models should swap in.

Thank you all very much!!!!!!

Both of these parts cars had 2.47 rearend:
81 380SEL & 85 500SEL parts cars

I MIGHT have a cluster for one of these ---- just don't remember.

Won't work. Those are for 126s, the car in question is a 116.
