Early vs. Late 617 Valve Covers:

Early 617 valve covers had an open pipe, mounted horizontally, that served as the breather. Later covers had a metal baffle riveted in place.

I would assume the later style would offer better oil control, but has anyone tested it????

Same goal for both, a big area for some oil to settle out of the air and/or condense against the walls. The later one just has more of it. They are interchangeable.
