617 Oil Separator Catch Can Concept:

aside from the one built into the .951/952 engine's air filter, I have seen several that emulate the late model 240 cans... ebay has a few items too. maybe build a siphon into the turbo oil return line...

All you need to do is make a pipe with an inlet, outlet and oil drain, put some stainless steel kitchen scrubbers inside and you've got one! Anything that will spin the vapors to the walls (like stock) or has a large contact surface area will work.
Or you could just run a vent pipe to the ground like every non-car diesel on the road. |
My "new to me' 85 Euro TD has a steel flex pipe welded directly into the "header' pipe as an " Oil Separator";)

Hmmm...I've never seen anything like that on my 617.950 air cleaner....later variants have this???? That should take care of the little drips of oil that come out of the wastegate vent from time to time..

yup, all .951,2 (82 and later turbo models, and all 126SD's have it)

I'm very interested in putting something together, mounting it low on the RH frame rail and plumbing it into the system. I don't get a lot of oil vapor coming out of the breather, but after about 4,000 to 5,000 miles, I will start to get droplets of oil cominig out of the wastgate vent. This should pretty much knock that out. It never does drop any oil on the ground. Instead, it lands on the RH engine mount and collects.
I have seen some catch cans on the import tuner sites that might work and save me time in building one from scratch. Any ideas???? |
I am thinking of doing the same, as I see the same oil show up as you... The custom-made version for my 2011 (looks really nice and is super-high quality) was over $200 for a powder-coated, CNC/laser cut and machined unit.
Id be wary of anything that is filled with steel wool, has any plastic in it, or doesnt have an interface diameter similar to the breather hose ID. |
