Picked up a 80A gasser Alternator at upullit
My 83 300d, 1 yo Autozoo - sez correct AC belt - started slipping, max adjust on belt. Ordered a Continental belt, obviously wider and a ***** to get on.
PS belt was stretched to max, had spare. Oops both alt belts are loose, then find out front bearing is very sloppy, but wasn't noisy, time to "upgrade". $20 with wiring, gave old Ford alt for core. Still has reman sticker on it, grabbed a spare regulator too. Installing tomorrow. |

All done - works great.
80A alt is in and works great.
Output wire reaches terminal block up by battery on a 83 300d, well away from turbo. Had to bend wire at output on alt to clear ac line and added wire loom on all wire, wish I had hi-temp sleeve though. Blue wire I made a adapter with a spade terminal to plug in stock wiring harness, a 3" piece of wire and a ring terminal to bolt to blue wire on 80A alt, as I didn't want to cut the stock wire, taped together. I removed the stock alt wire at the term block, taped up and screwed in the new wire. BTW whoever replaced the last alt didn't use the spacer for the top adj bolt, the old alt is still good. Made a spacer, replaced the bolts as the had 1/16-1/8 grooves worn in both of them - had spares. Now have a spare alt in trunk, stock wiring will still work on. Belts were tight to get on, had to bump starter, alt must be larger, as the belts were ez to get off old alt. 14.1v hot at idle. I do need to add a larger wire from term block to battery, I"ll pickup hi-temp wiring sleeve then. Sorry no pics. Last edited by badgator; 05-17-2010 at 01:29 PM. |

Nice write up. the 80amp is an improvement over the 65amp.
there were quite a few threads on using the 115amp bosch AL-129-X that is used on the Saab`s. I think 87 thru early 90`s. don`t see much talk about it any more. It is a little larger that the 65amp, but fits right in there, and uses the stock "V" belts after swaping pullys. made new wiring harness with larger wire. Charlie

I thought all the SD's and the 82 and up 300 D's had 65A stock? not so?
I've used the 80 amps plenty of times with the stock wiring. same connectors, never had any issues. |
