Castrol Syntec
The local Wal-Mart has the 5 quart jug of Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic Motor Oil on sale at $14.88. That is less than $3 per quart. People debate about "full synthetic" as this is a group III base oil.
They only have the 10W-30 grade so I got three jugs (15 quarts, enough for 2 oil changes). The oils carried SL/CF rating so it is suitable for our light duty diesel cars. But on the front, there was a label saying "For gasoline engines." I am pretty sure there will be no problem using it in a diesel engine but my concern is that if it is "for gasoline engines", our diesel may not get the benefit out of it. Thoughts and comments? |

It's CF rated, so it will be fine.
The controversy is about the actual ingredients -- it appears that the definition "Full Synthetic" is bogus and that the majority of the contents of the bottle are petroleum base. I'm not sure which part, base fluid or additives, but my guess is that the base fluid is petroleum and the additives are synthetic. This has been hashed several times. So far as I'm concerned, if it is rated for diesel use it is fine. Don't expect it to perform like Mobil 1 or Delvac, and you will get good service from it. Treat it like dino oil (3000 mile change interval) and forget it. Peter

I won't touch the "oil subject", but my only concern is the weight of the oil. The owner's manuals for both of my Benzes say that 10W-30 should only be used for temps. ranging from -4 to 50 degs. This oil would only really be good for the winter. Unless that was your plan anyways. They list 10W-40 as the ideal "year-round" oil. Of course if your owner's manual says it is ok to use 10W-30 year-round then have at it. BTW any full synthetic oil has a "CF" rating.

I have been using Syntec 5W-50 for the past 36,000 miles in a low price 160,000 mile '79 300SD I bought for a winter car. I change it every 10,000 miles and the oil consumption has decreased from 3 quarts to 1 quart in 10K miles. It originally had some leaks but they have all disappeared. So much for synthetic oil causing leaks. And so much for changing the oil every 3K miles.
I got some Syntec at Kmart for about $15 and I got fooled. The jugs it came in were only 4 quarts instead of the 5 quart jugs I got a Walmart. Beware. P E H |

P E H:
You are right. I also saw the ones at K-Mart (4 qts). Wal-Mart does not have the 5W-50 grade. All they have is 10W-30 which is perfect for the Michigan winter. |
