Euro 220D For Sale in Ohio

A friend of mine has a 1971 (I think) 220D sedan. It is brown over beige and an automatic. The odometer only reads around 30,000 miles, there is a sticker in the door that says the odometer was replaced at around 20,000 miles. So we both believe the car has under 60,000 original miles on it. My theory is it was 20,000 kilometers and they changed the speedo head when it was imported so it is actually under 50k. I do not recall what the title says. The story is a man bought it for his wife, she drove it for a while then passed away, the man never sold the car and it sat in the garage. My friends brother bought the house, and bought the contents of the garage.

The car has euro bumpers, euro plate bolt hole spacing, euro stereo, and the odometer thing, that is why I think it is a euro.

Paint is flat but could probably buff back if you wanted a beater. Interior is like a time capsule, the door pocket on the drivers door has a crack in it, but the dash is perfect. My father an old mercedes salesmen says it smells like they did when they were new. Its pretty amazing.

Now the bad. Rust. Both rockers need done, probably both front fenders as well. The rear 1/4s had some bubbling but it could be repaired. Car is missing the hood star. One of the headlights is cracked. The car could use calipers all the way around because it does a lot of sitting, maybe you could hone them out and make them work. Exhaust is a bit loud.

The good, he just put some silly amount like $1,800 into making the motor perfect. IIRC its got a new battery, new alternator, the shop worked on the injection system as well. The car runs like a top. Two new front tires, the rears looked okay.

I was offered the car, I don't have room for it or the money for it.

He wants $1,000 OBO. The car is in New Richmond, Ohio.

I don't have pics, not a lot of solid info, and it isn't my car so I didn't post it in the classifieds. PM me for his number. I feel bad seeing the car sit in his driveway but like I said I just can't adopt it right now. He bought a 240D with more options and a 4speed that he dailys. He asked me to pass it along, I've talked to my local friends and they like me, don't have space right now.

.
The economics sounds about right.

I have a neighbor restoring a e30 bmw he bought for $500. It's been sitting in his driveway for years now and his garage is full of motor and tranny parts. The interesting thing is that he KNOWS the car will never sell for what he is putting into it.

Labor of love I suppose.

Bumpers are the same on W115/W114 MBs through 72, euro and USA. Brackets were added to adapt to USA plates.

The 73s only differed by having longer front bumper brackets.

Now the 74-76s......

I'll bet the miles are a lot higher than that. On these cars, you don't have the extra digit to record 100k miles. Look closely at the pedals to verify wear.

Let me see if I can get him to email me pics.

Cars with 155,000 miles don't have interiors like this.

The car also has a euro radio in it I think. Its like FM and WC or something or AM and WC or something, it was wierd.
