84 300d fuel tank questions

Im trying to source a new tank at the local pick n pull. Before I go to the trouble of pulling a tank I had a few questions that I'm sure someone here will be able to answer. Were all 123 chassis 300d tanks the same size? What abt the 240d tanks? I know there is a 83 240d at the pick n pull, but I was under the impression that they have a smaller tank than the 300d. What I'm trying to determine is what years and models fuel tanks will crossover to my 84 300d? I'm pretty sure I have the 21 gallon tank, I just dont have any clue what other years and models carried the same thing. Any info that the forum can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looking in the FSM VOL 1, all the w123 are 21 1/3 gallons.

I had the same question, tks for making me look it up. I thought the 280E gasser might have a little larger because of the lower milage. but no dice.

Most of the PNP here in Calif and the 4 I have been to in the Portland, Or area all poke large holes in the fuel tanks making them useless . they say it is to get them to drain faster when processing the cars.

In my 85 300D, I have an after mkt aluminium tank that was offered back in the 80`s when there wern`t a lot of stations offering Diesel, for the extended range.
I picked it up out of a 300CD that was being parted locally. the tank holds an extra 12 gallons, mounts up against the main tank and bolts to the inner fenders in the trunk.

I originally installed it when we go on long trips, since I hate having to stop for fuel, and this gives me about a 900 plus mile range + -. I have a ball valve to shut it off when not in use.

I have seen these tanks from time to time, a few in PNP , and depending on the size/shape depended on what ever MFG made them.

One draw back is the tank does take up some room in the trunk.

Thanks Charmalu

I guess I must have been misinformed. Go figure! I had been told there was a 65 and an 80 litre version. If the FSM says that there is only one size, then I guess there is only one size. I will have to do a closer inspection to see if the tank has been pierced to drian by the pick n pull. Thanks for the heads up on that one, I will make sure to check it thoroughly before I start to remove anything. If you ever run across another aux tank like the one you spoke about, try to remem to PM me, I would seriously be interested in buying one if I dont have any luck finding one. I dont know if it is possible to ship one or not, but if so, I would gladly pay you for it. Thanks.

I know that in the 1983 and 1980 240d owners manual it states that the 240d tank is smaller. I think the difference is about 4 gallons- 17gal. vs. 21gal. for the 300d.

also the TD tank is smaller.
17 rings a bell, I've run it low, and drained it, and know it is not 21gallons!
not that it would fit a sedan anyway...

And yes, all the junkyards I've been to poke big holes in the tanks to drain them. Pity...

Huh, the 82 owners manual says 17.2.

I wonder if someone didn't swap tanks in your 79. I have never checked the tank in my 85 240D, I was thinking it was steel.

1985 Mercedes 300D wont start

My Mercedes 300D wont start, glow plugs, fuel lift pump, all work fine.
I recently replaced both primary and secondary fuel filters. It also has good compression. It doesn't even try to start. I think there's not enough fuel pressure in the injection pump. IDK what it could be.. PLEASE HELP

You need to start a separate thread on the no-start condition.

A couple months ago, I did find a fuel tank in a 85 300D in a PNP that was not punched full of holes. some one messed up and it got through the system while preparing it to be set in the yard. It must have had a full tank as there was a large wet area under the car where someone removed the supply line from the tank under the hood, then the fuel drained down to the level of the line.

I did have to drain out 10 gal of fuel, but they wouldn`t let me have it, and it was clean fuel too.

Out the door price with a $20 coupon was $25. usually the sending unit is an additional $22, but they didn`t see it.

I replaced it in a 82 240D, whiich has the plastic 17 gallon tank.

Later I sourced another 21 gal tank from another 85 300D from Capflya. and that tank went into my 80 240D which has the 17 gal metal tank. Thank You David, .

Nice having the extra fuel, just went 634 miles and added 18.88 gallons. the return trip keeping the speed down below 65, then used 15.96 gallons.

Start looking for cars being parted out, this is the best source for a tank.

I'd like to replace the plastic tank on my 1983 240D. I believe the fuel is leeching out, and making the trunk smell badly of diesel fuel (no other leaks to be found). Will the 300D tank fit my 240D with no modifications? What about the fuel sending unit (will the gas gauge read properly, my mechanic mentioned replacing the instrument panel, which I'd prefer not to do)?

I found a little bit of info on a factory service bulletin about these plastic tanks being replaced, but they wanted me to pay to read the entire notice.

Any advice on removing/replacing is greatly appreciated

Thanks!
