at least on the 123 series odometers, it's easy to fix it permanently! free repair too.

So true. I once worked valet and one of the best maintained highest mileage cars in the lot was an early 3cyl geo metro. The thing had I think 3 or 400,000 miles on it. The owner would have it washed and detailed regularly and so on. Looked new and ran new. Had a CB radio as well If you care about it, any car can last forever. The throw away culture is just too ingrained when it comes to automobiles. It amazes me that people think a 5 year old car needs to be sold.

when I was growing up, it was common for 10 year old cars to be so worn out smoking badly, and oil pressures nonexistent, the idiot lights all running on oil... as the roller cam cars and better oil formulations came out, older and older cars came in for service. (it probably helped that cars went from 2K new to 30K new...)
oil changes are WAAAAAAAY cheaper than car payments.

layback40, it's not a 123, it's a 126. They seem to have used degenerating plastic on the gears. I see lots more 126's that say odo broken than 123's.

I got it.
pics to follow. My customer needed low $$ ride. and I said this COULD be a good purchase for reliability. he paid me 90.00 to drive him to asheville, and inspect the car, (150miles each way!) I brought every tool I could think of, and discussed the car with the seller heavily. she got the car from a mercedes mechanic that has maintained it for the last 300K miles, and she's put around 50K on it, regular oil changes done by her... wrong oil... still not a bad vehicle. pulled the cover, the valves were all in good shape clearance wise, the timing marks aligned up exactly on 0, and the cam was very well oiled, and no wear or evidence of heat at all. the oil line had a wear leak in it just starting, the driver's motor mount was just gone... really bad. I brought a splice with me, cause I just knew the oil line would be damaged. installed it, cleaned all the oil spill off the motor, and cleaned up the belts. cranked her up, and took it out for a drive. smooth solid shifts. smooth Idle, smooth power. I felt comfortable driving it back the 150 miles the customer was happy with the condition of things. the ignition lock was out of the dashboard, and it has a gasser lock installed and a little valve installed to kill the motor. minor rust in the fenders and the rear window seal needs replacement.

Cool. Sounds like a good one, even with 500k.

"I have 2 300d's that have done the 500k thing now without the odometer stopping. Dont understand why the problem is so common in the USA."
did your 300d's do the 500k thing using the h-to-wn odometer method, or did you actually drive them past 500k kilometers each?

My first 300SD (a 1980) had about 400,000 miles on the original engine and it ran great. The transmission was replaced, though. I remember seeing a 300D on craigslist with over 900,000 miles on it.

Odometer malfunction
I think maybe its caused by Temperatures....
Lots of USA cars that have survived in fair condition till now have been in hotter dry parts of the country, prolly most of their lives. --The dash top panels have cracked, broken and de-generated.--Available in the States, I believe you have 'Cappings' for dashboards to repair the heat damage?? --Never seen anything like that here! here in wet, cold UK, I have never ever seen even the slightest crack in any dash-board panel or a malfunctioning odometer, and over the years Ive had quite a few and seen many more! --Then again Ive only seen 5 W123 on the roads in the last 4 months, and I drive 500 miles per week!--Not many left here now.....

everything's better in the UK right alastair? odometers, dashboards, etc.
how about the roads? are those also better in the UK? one has to wonder why there are fewer and fewer vintage cars in a country which is well known for having some of the best condition roads in the world... ... ...

Hmm..... I think thats a little unfair.... --My post wasn't to say things are better here!--Quite the contrary! 'Orrible weather, opressive taxation, Terrible roads, Mega fuel price, the list goes on and on! In the past and At the moment, You guys have it good, but I fear that may soon come to an end, with the slow and devious destruction of your 'Bill Of Rights' and 'Constitution'! --As you may know, these are slowly becoming just quaint old Documents with no real meaning anymore--Which is quite TERRIBLE, IMO!.... After all, I was only offering a possible Reason why Odometers seem to fail in the American market.....
