If an 85 300D is facing downhill would your oil dipstick read hi or lo?

I don't know so I'm asking.

The stick is horizontal to the front and back of the car.

Neither, because I always measure mine as flat as possible.

Front of car pointing down will give you a higher oil level reading........

Perhaps fluid level is important enough to know the measurement on YOUR (original poster) car with your dip stick for sure? You may want to measure on level ground per FSM and again in your driveway to establish relative measurements. Of course, on some vehicles, the shaft holding the dipstick can be installed at different heights than originally specked which also would throw the measurement off.

Yes that's the proper course of action. I'm going to let the car sit level for a sufficient time so the oil will settle to the correct level and then check it. I wasn't trying to get an accurate reading, just an indication since I had the hood open changing a glow plug. But checking it still had value as I now know it's low thanks to all the responses here and I need to get an accurate reading.

It depends on the location of the dipstick relative to the pan. Is is in the middle, closer to the front or back?
