Rear Foglight?

So my 1987 W124 has a headlight switch that has a rear fog symbol, and it pulls out once, turns on the fogs, and pulls out a second time for the rears.. then nothing happens.

The taillights have an extra socket that doesn't have an electrode in it.

My 1987 Parts car is the exact same story...

Do US cars not have rear fogs?

Jeremy5848 05-25-2010 11:43 PM

Rear fog lamp

Correct. US cars did not get the rear fog wiring. I adapted the socket in my '87 to hold a second tail light. This gives me four tail lights and three (with the center high-mounted) brake lights. See this thread for details.

Around 1991, MB's started to have the rear fogs as standard.

My 89 190E does not have the rear fog, but my uncle's 92 and former 93 had.

Our 1990 300TE does not have the rear fog.

And the W126 never got a rear fog in the US :( Well from the factory anyway ;)

So they lied to us with the switch. Liars!

How hard is it to wire up the fog?

babymog 05-26-2010 11:30 AM

You need the wiring to the tail-lamp, later bulb-holder or add a contact to the existing one, wiring to the switch, a newer switch with the rear-fog contacts and indicator bulb, ...

Jeremy5848 05-26-2010 11:40 AM

And when you have all that finished, you'd probably get cited for having a tail light out (since the rear fog lamp is on one side only).

I happen to have a 1994 parts car, would a '94 E320 have a rear fog as standard or would it have been an option.

bobodaclown 05-26-2010 12:35 PM

It's removed from US vehicles. No wiring. Not offered as an option in the US. Standard on Non-US vehicles.

compu_85 05-26-2010 12:35 PM

Would have been standard on a 94.

almost correct.
I'm pretty sure the switches have the contacts in them.
no wires but the contacts should be there.

compu_85 05-26-2010 01:15 PM

The switch in my SDL did not have the contacts. It's easy to tell if the switch does though, pull the knob off and see if there is a white plastic socket for a small light bulb. No socket = no contacts.

I was able to get the wiring working on my w123 with a guide from Benzworld. I've used it often when the fog in Ithaca was terrible.

I'm not sure if the wiring between the w123 and w124s is the same. I guess if you were feeling adventurous then go ahead and find out:cool:

This is Darren's very nice DIY thread. He also made one for this board.

You can just explain to the officer that it's a rear fog, and it came that way. I would only turn it on in foggy or bad weather conditions, since it is distracting especially at night when the car that has the rear fogs on, is in front of you, in traffic.

I like rear fogs I think the ones on the A4 saved my ass a few times in super heavy snow when Ohio has its freak blizzards once every other year. I am feeling adventurous enough to try to tackle it, focusing on my motor right now. I am directing funds at making it run right, no sense in spending a weekend wiring up one bulb only to decide the motor is junk.

When I go for it I will take a lot of photos.
