I am going to say yes. I've seen casting numbers the same between both engines before with the respective years cast on it and the head castings look physically the same. Cams are different, but you can run a later came on a .950.

The 79-85 SDs and 81-85 Ds and TDs are the same engine, as far as anyone can tell. So the head should swap no problem. I know the 79 SDs had a bit lower HP than the 80 SDs and up. I can't quite remember why but I doubt it would make any incompatibility in the head.

I believe the only head difference is on the TD (wagons) as they have the hook up for the SLS system on it.

Hog,

There are (2) main issues with a 617 'D' head in a 'SD' application:

1. Prechambers

2. Glow Plugs

The Turbo prechambers are about 1.0mm bigger than their non-turbo counterparts. However, there is a turbo style pre-chamber that will fit, although I do not recall the part number. My Dad has a set and they are made by Balo. You can also have the prechamber bores in the head reamed, or machine down the prechambers.

Secondly, the SD (Turbo) 617 head has small, pencil-style glow plugs with a 10mm thread and the 300D (early) had 18mm glow plugs. Fortunately, several suppliers make a replacement.

Checke everything first...Robert

he's not asking about any N/A heads (.912) he's asking about the .95x heads. all of them use the pencil plugs, and should use the same prechambers yes?
the 83D was a turbo (.952) and will certainly have the small pencil plugs, so it should work fine in the 79SD (.950) as long as the prechambers are the same... I am NOT certain they are, but I am certain the glow plugs are the same.

I read the '300D' part and assumed it was a N.A. motor....Robert

head compatability

the first 14-thousand-and-some 617950 have used the big glow plugs.
950 and 912 used the same heads, changed from big to small glow plugs
at about the same time. the prechambers changed at the same time, with the glow plugs. when the head changed, the block changed also. don't know if you can mix old and new........

300D 'NA' head with 18mm plugs accepted Turbo valves and pre-chambers. It works nicely on dad's 617.951 engine...Robert
