Breather tube advice

I need to fix/upgrade the breather tube for my 78 240d. The current tube looks like an afterthought of the previous owner and doesn't fit correctly (it's twisted and bent so that it is probably not working at all)

I have been trying to locate the part but am unsure of which part# I am looking for specifically. It seems there were different setups for different years?

Also, I have noted that a few people have done diy breather setups using an oil seperator. As I definently have blowbly I am wondering if there is good documentation on how to do this.

thanks!

I've got everything from my 78 parts car if you want pulls that are in good shape.
no oil separator though. the problem with adding a separator to a car that didn't come with one is where to drain the captured oil to...

Anyone?

I need to replace this hose, can anyone advise on what the appropriate type of hose to use would be, i.e. what kind of hose could i pick up from the local auto parts store?

It looks like on my car the hose goes simply from the valve cover to the air intake right below the air cleaner housing.

If it is just a round hose any hose like Fuel, Vacuum or Emission Hose will work.

If the Breather Hose is the same size as the Fuel Inlet Hose 5/16 of an inch inside diameter hose will work.

Get the free EPC software from MB: http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp, put in your VIN, find the correct part number and get the correct part from your dealer. Odds are the local auto parts store doesn't have what you need.

For what it is worth, here are a few pics:

1. here's the point on the air intake where the hose attaches (the smaller horizontal inlet)

2. and here is the same pic with the old hose attached. I'm not sure if that was the original hose or not. Notice that it is kind of pinched in the middle.

Is there an "upgrade" i could do here or is it best to simply find the original stock hose?

And does that look like the original hose?

That may be a simpler hose than what the epc has.
Item # 155 is part #617 016 03 30.

the original is a rubber elbow attached to the valve cover, and a hard plastic pre bent tube that attaches to it, then another soft rubber connector at the intake.

most black rubber hose will do.

make a template of the size by tracing it on a piece of paper, or measure with a ruler / tape.

there should be no serious concern for oil separation on this motor - no necessity for a filter element unless you see and smell smoke that is burning oil.

I ended up buying the plastic breather hose from the dealer (plus another elbow hose) and replacing the oil filler cap seal and the valve cover seal. So far the top of my engine is staying clean.
