Timing Chain Brand?

Hi
As part of the ongoing process of trying to get my 1985 300td in all around good shape, I decided the check my timing chain stretch.

To my surprise it measured zero stretch. This made me think that the chain may have been replaced - - so I looked for a brand mark. I found the letters JW (or maybe JWs) with an underline.

Can anyone tell me who made it and what its quality might be?
Thanks,
Joseph

How many miles are on the car? Also, how did you determine 0 stretch?

Never heard of JW. Have heard of IWIS though.

JWS....

Hmm, Ive seen those on fleagay for a tenner--Cheap and cheerful....

Ive even used one, and in MHO, not particularly good, you get what you pay for...

IWIS is the Original Chain make from M.B. which costs 10 times the JWS....

Hi
Odometer shows 155,000 and the CarFax doesn't anything higher - BUT - the odometer just works once in a while for a few miles and the CarFax showed 147,000 about 10 years ago. So, who knows. The oil cap does dance some with tea kettle test at idle, so I'm assuming a goodly number of additional miles have been added.

When I lined up the cam sprocket/tower marks - the crankshaft pointer was on 0 degrees TDC

JWs vs. IWIS? Hummm. Maybe I better take a better look and find another mark to recheck.

Joseph

Hi
Your mark looks very close to mine. Can you read the letters clearly?
Thanks

It may look like JWS but if you look carefully it reads JWIS, which is the mark for IWIS timing chains. Don't ask me why it looks the way it does but it does.

If you want a confirmation check ********* and look up a timing chain for your car, IWIS chains show the somewhat stylized JWIS mark.

Alistair, You are right about JWS. They are often cheap junk motor bike drive chains. They stretch quick. I guess they just wanted to look like IWIS. Best not get them confused.
