Any luck? Curious if you or anyone has pictures to share. I too would like to consider removal of the ALDA on my 617 as well as the 603.

Safely remove ALDA: Get a hold of the nut at its base and rotate it CW (as you are look down on top of the IP). Hold the ALDA to keep it from rotating while you do this. Good luck if you have 603 there is tight space to do it this way.
Or, as I did, maybe less safe but way more efficient: Get a hold of the nut at the base and hold that steady I think it's a 27mm. Put a big long handled screwdriver blade on the hose outlet of the ALDA and whack the screwdriver (from the front of the car) so as to spin the ALDA a bit. This loosens the threads, then spin the nut - usually by hand - after this treatment. Lift off the ALDA.

It's a little difficult to remove the ALDA from a 603, but it can be done withouth removing anything else. It just takes some time & patience.
Scottmcphee has it right. Go for it! You'll be rewarded with a car that responds as it should! If you keep your foot out of it, your fuel mileage will NOT be affected. My 603 still manages 30+- mpg with the ALDA removed. Low speed black smoke may still happen at low, take-off rpms.

I've removed the cap with a screwdriver tip and adjusted 1-1/2 turns CCW on several, haven't removed one yet, so I'm more comfortable going that route (just a matter of preference), which can take between 20minutes and an hour depending on how sharp your longest screwdriver tip is. Be careful to NOT damage the top where the screw is, just the bottom edge to get the band off of the cap.

Ok, I took off the alda. I have more power but i'm still going 40 mph up long steep hills. How do i know if the turbo is working, i can't hear anything for sure. Should it be noticeable when it spools up? I can go 80 mph on the flat but it's just up hill, it slows down, it will kick down, but has little power. The rpm's are at 31/2 and sounds loud, but not much power. Diesel purge? new nozzels? injectors worn out? I don't know what to try next...

Just a quick question. When you remove the alda, do you put anything over the hole/pin/whatever where it mounted? Can dirt get in the IP? Does this also work on a 602 engine? Thanks

The ALDA plunger has a seal so dirt can't get into the IP but it's a good idea to somehow cover that area so it stays clean in case you want to refit the ALDA. If the plunger seal is worn evidenced by a lot of oil when you remove the ALDA, you really want to cover the area just in case.
There should be some performance benefit to removing a 2.5 ALDA. The fuel boost control system is more sophisticated than on pressure wastegate systems and might throw an error if it determines the ALDA is not functioning. Not likely, though. Sixto 87 300D |

Sixto, Thanks for the reply. The turbo was changed to a pressure system years ago. EGR was removed as a "test" and I no longer have any boost problems. I was thinking of removing the alda and increaseing the boost if necessary to prevent smoke at WOT.

There'll likely still be smoke while the turbo spools to produce more air, such as from a standstill. That's the price of performance.

Filters are new. Is timing the IP something a novice can do? Any other ideas? when i put er to the floor i have black smoke coming out the back. So i'm getting enough fuel right?
