97 210 S/W switch access/removal

Have a 97 E300 that no longer starts out in 1st gear when in Drive with S/W switch in "S". Trans will start out in 1st if manually shifted. Suspect soda may have been spilled on console. Already replaced damaged window switch cluster due to this. Would like to access S/W switch for testing. Anyone know how to remove S/W switch module from shifter assembly?

All I can tell you is that you remove the black plastic ring around the shifter by getting your fingernails under it and pulling it up. Then, stick your fingers into the opening and pull upward on the wood to pop it off.

Beyond that, I don't know exactly to remove the W/S switch...

That's as far as I could get. W/S switch does not appear to be removed from top of shifter, although I find it hard to believe it would be necessary to remove shifter for removal of W/S switch from the bottom of shifter.

When I get home tonight, I'll look in the WIS to see what it says.

OK, according to the horse's mouth, AKA the WIS, you must pull the console and the entire selector assembly. There's a note on the selector assembly: "cannot be disassembled..."

Although, an enterprising individual might be able to figure a way to separate the switch from the selector assy.

I already had a bad feeling that W/S switch module needed to come out from bottom of shifter. Hopefully getting shifter assembly out isn't too bad. I've never had console up, but that looks easy enough. Thanks for the insight.

Since you spilled, I wonder if it might be prudent to spray the switch with some electrical contact cleaner before trying to remove it?

KarTek, found two solutions on the UK site. Easy one was to just remove the PNRD4321 cover. Cover is only attached by a soft, non-hardening adhesive and is easily reinstalled. This reveals the switch that can then be removed. Switch has no electrical components. It's purpose is to depress a spring loaded plunger that becomes gummy and eventually sticks in the down position (Winter or 2nd gear start). Cleaning plunger solves the problem. This is the way I went. More involved method starts by unbolting shifter and removing shifter cover to gain access. Thanks for your help, Chip

Cool! That's the kind of stuff the factory manual won't tell you.
