Take it to Mercedes Collision and see what they quote for it. Use that for your baseline price, not bob around the corner.

I know these big faceless insurance companies have tons of money just sitting around, but the last time I checked that all came out of the pockets of those who pay the premiums. There is very little that pisses me off more than someone trying to take an unfortunate situation and turn it into a get rich quick scheme. That is why insurance is so expensive now.
Get it fixed at his expense, but if you can get it done for $500 that's great. Sure it's nice to have a few more $$ on hand, but dishonesty is not the way to get it. |

No dishonesty here, I am right there with you. I cannot stand seeing people milk stuff because everyone else reaps the consequences. If a professional shop quotes 1000, and I decide I am ok with a friend doing it for less, it is completely acceptable to keep the change.

yeah, take it to the MB dealership or a high-end body shop and get a quote for the body damage. then the guy's $1000 offer will be what his deductible is and you get the dents out and a paint job on him. go for it.

Into all the "get the insurance company for everything they've got" and "the guy should be hanged for a tree cutting accident, don't let him get away with not filing it on his insurance" stuff... let's assume for the moment that it really is repairable for at or around $1000. Let's also assume that if the tree guy files insurance instead of paying out of pocket, his premiums will get jacked up through the roof IF they continue covering him. That's a fair bet.
There's nothing wrong with keeping good neighbors with the tree service as well as with your neighbor as previously suggested. There's no reason to victimize the poor guy for his accident when he's being aboveboard, honest, and working very hard to get a reasonable settlement for BOTH parties. He's already said that if he's presented with the repair bill for the damage, he'll pay it fully. If paying it out of his pocket rather than running it through his already-sky-high insurance plan suits him better, and the original poster is neighborly and amenable to this -- then it's just as good an arrangement. I know there's been lots of suggestions here. Some more reasonable than others. I'm not criticizing anybody specifically or personally. I'm just saying, there's quite a bit of anti-tree-guy spirit in this thread, or at the very least some "milk the situation for all it's worth" spirit here -- and I'm merely saying that, had the tree guy been obstreperous or uncooperative about it, then that might be an appropriate option. But as it is, the tree fellow is honestly doing his best to resolve the situation in a way that's most beneficial to both parties. As long as this continues -- it's not a bad way to do business even though it's a dying mentality. If a shop gives the anticipated $4000 quote as previous mentioned in the thread, then the next move is to take that quote to the tree guy and ask if it's now worth it to go through his insurance. In my $0.02 opinion. |

Its one thing to have a neighbors tree fall on you car as an act of god. It is quite another when it falls on your neighbor is cutting it down.

I think the OP should get whatever he is fully entitled. If if was me then I would use the highest quote, then decide what to do afterward.
