Is the w124's bumper supposed to have a bullethole in it?

... I thought it wasn't possible that any defect on my car could get past me at this point, but I discovered a weird one last night. There's a perfectly round little hole on the underside of the bumper strip on the driver's side. I checked back in some older photos I had, and sure enough, it's been there for a long time. Never noticed it. Is it supposed to be there? If so, what the heck is it's purpose?

By the by, the reason I was inspecting my bumper at 2 a.m. last night was that on my way home from work I noticed a funny scraping sound. I got out and looked and found this:

No idea what I hit, but it chewed through that plastic like a bear. Fortunately no damage to the oil cooler, tire or anywhere else. I never felt or heard whatever hit it.

that hole might be for the outdoor temperature sensor that shows up on your LCD in the dash

I always thought that temp sensor was under the bottom of the bumper ... maybe I'm thinking of a different sensor.

That sensor is located near the front license plate

If it was a bullet hole, we could say it got there from the guy you ran down when he was in your way & pointing a gun at you. That would explain the damage as well.

Early W124 cars had the sensor at the bullet hole location on the left side of the bumper. Later, they moved the sensor up by the front license plate. I'm not sure of the cutover date. My '87 has the sensor on the left side.

Cool ... that must be the origin of the hole. There is a sensor closer to the plate, too though (or in my case, the blank where the plate would go) ... I believe this car had its bumper replaced when my mom hit a deer in 1995, so its possible the hole in the bumper doesn't have a sensor in it. I'll investigate later.

Layback, I like your explanation better ... think I'll use that story when I'm explaining it to friends.

The sensor moved in '88 IIRC.

It was a mid-year change. Mine is on the left bumper but later in the year they changed it to behind the license plate. I am guessing it was at the similar chassis cutoff to where they rearranged the locations of the hydraulic self-leveling reservoir -- my father in law has the newer reservoir arrangement and the license plate temp sensor on his 87. Of course, that is the wagon. Don't know when they changed the sedan.

My 86 w126 300SDL has the temp sensor behind the front license plate. If this helps to add to the confusion.

My early production W124 300D - gray market car - has the bullet hole. However, since my car was not equipped with the outside temperature display, the bullet hole is plugged with the factory rubber grommet!
