How is your transmission running with the Mobil 1?

Synthetic lubricants in older vehicles: think twice

Two and a half years ago I put Mobil 1 synthetic in the original transmission of our '96 E300D (W210, OM606, 722.438) at 249,000 miles. To my dismay, it leaked significantly at the front pump seal, meaning every time the car was driven it dribbled a couple of teaspoonfuls on the floor of the garage. Note that I do not say that the Mobil 1 "caused" the leak. My mechanic and I are of the opinion that the smaller molecules of the synthetic ATF found tiny gaps in the ancient seals of the high-mileage transmission.

I immediately removed the Mobil 1 and returned to a non-synthetic ATF but it was too late - the leak would not stop. Ended up having the transmission rebuilt, an expensive experience. [FYI, the rebuilder stated that the "wear parts had another 50,000 miles to go and the "hard parts" were all undamaged.] So I would advise giving the matter some serious thought before putting synthetic fluid in an older machine.

OTOH, the OM606 engine has been on Mobil 1 synthetic oil (first 5W-40 and now 0W-40) for the same length of time and does not leak at all. Ditto for the differential. Go figure.
