W140 603 radiator fan shroud

I noticed that the fan shroud on the 603 powered W140 is not a full shroud. The shroud is terminated about 5" from the left side of the radiator (driver side). When I compared this with the shroud from a gasser S320 I found that the gasser has a full shroud that extends from one end of the rad to the other.

I would have thought that the diesel would have been more likely to have a full shroud but it doesn't. Doesn't seem like a partial shroud is somewhat defeating the purpose of having the clutch fan draw air through the radiator?
