New 83' 300SD Owner - Questions

I am the proud owner of a beautiful White/Palomino 83' 300SD.

The body is in superlative condition with original paint. I'm wondering if my trunk lid has been replaced at some point. It feels "light" for the amount of metal it should contain. I've also noticed that the vertical surface above the tailpipe is "stained" by the exhaust. The rear quarter panels that meet it are not. The inside of the trunk is a primer-ish dark gray and there is no triangle affixed to it.

Would one of you fine individuals be willing to look at the interior of your known OEM early 80's SD and tell me if it's the same color as the exterior?

I love this car...

Nice car! How many miles does it have on it?

Mine is an 84, but has been repainted (no known body damage, though). The inside of the trunk is the same primer gray that you're referring to. The emergency triangles are for Euro models.

Congratulations!

189307 when I bought it last night. All it needs is a cruise control box, an oil change and a 20k interval valve adjustment. The PO was meticulous...

I might do a Diesel Purge and pour some Sea Foam in before the oil change.

Of course there are a few little things here and there like the cracked trunk lip plastic threshold thingie and the door seals who's material coating has rubbed off towards the top of the jamb, the leather is getting tired in some spots too.

Just found out that although it had been registered as a classic (like my 84' f-250 6.9l IDI) now that it has changed owners and the law changed here last year in CO - it is no longer considered a classic and must be smogged yearly to the tune of $75.00. My pickup will have to do this starting in 2013 when the classic plates expire. Guess the bastards that have their old roadsters didn't like the idea of an 82' Tempo having classic plates Now only 1975 and older cars can have the designation.

I've had a lot of fun doing numerous little improvement projects with mine. They are great cars and pretty simple to work on if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. There are also still plenty of them out there, which makes getting parts easy.

Enjoy!

I guess I figured that it had been replaced and the paint job wasn't as good as oem given the way the quarter-panels don't require a rubdown, but the trunk lid does.

I had the very same impression of my trunk lid when I first bought mine; I didn't think there was something wrong with it, I just noticed how light it is. I wouldn't know about the dark gray since my car's original color is "Anthracite Gray", which would pretty much match the color you're describing. Great find! No cracks on the dash... nice! How much did you get it for?

Yeah, both the hood and the rear deck lid (trunk) are aluminum on these cars. be sure if you are having it repainted, you let the body shop know this ahead of time... sandpaper really does a number on aluminum!!! don't ask how I know this.

Paid 5k for it, with a spare set of powder coated oem wheels and a bunch of other parts including studded winters. After looking at a few SD/L's in the area in the 3-4k range with thousands of dollars of deferred maintenance I decided that the was no such thing as a cheap old Benz - besides it took almost 2 years of egging the wife out of the Audi allroad and the last thing I want now is to have something go wrong for her on her maiden voyages in this work of art.

Any advice on whether or not to use a clay stick on the trunk lid to get the soot stains off? What is the gentlest and easiest way to remove the letters and emblems to treat the paint around them?

I am positive I have one or two 126 cruise control relay boxes laying around. I pulled one from an 89 300SE and the other from an 87 SEL I believe (I am certain it was a 126 and an 87 gasser, just don't recall the exact model). If you supply the part number you need I can look at them and see if it is what you need.

I am unsure if all 126s used the same cc relay box or not. I am also unsure of their working status as they were pulled from the pick n pull so they would be priced accordingly (cheap) but both cars were in good shape (a shame to be at the pick n pull) in fact I stripped just about everything from the 89s interior. It is waiting to go into my SD. PM me if you are interested. I guess I could swap them into my SD to see if they work but my SD is currently parked due to a massive front seal leak in the tranny. I'll get around to fixing it soon.

The other thing I'd like to find a source for is the door molding seals that are cloth coated - I'd replace them with the cloth covered style to match the interior if they were the available - or just the rubber type if that's all that's available. Is there a parts company that prints a catalog with replacement parts for the 126's - I seem to recall a company in Kansas that does this for MG's...

Nice looking car. Guess now you are going to have to deal with that "wannabe Benz owner" under your name.... Welcome to the club.

When I bought mine they were pretty worn and torn. I got mine from the local junkyard . I guess I got lucky on those because they look great. They don't look new, but that's fine because then they would not go with the rest of the car... They look just natural
