Question 220D advice (newbie)

Hello, folks!

New guy here... I have my eye on a '71 220D nearby that could be had for a sing (like a $75 song or so), but I wonder if I might trouble you all for some advise. I have never owned a MB, but am somewhat mechanically inclined (meaning I tinker on my Taurus SHO and 71 VW bus, have rebuilt Vespa scooters, pulled an engine from a SHO parts car, kept an MG and a Triumph running, etc... handy with a wrench and a Haynes manual).

Anyway, this particular car has its share of rust and is a lovely primer gray. It's missing its battery (no biggie) and water pump, apparently (I have not confirmed the latter). I understand water pumps are cheap, and install is like on any other car, so I am confident I can do this part myself. Am I to understand, also, that the pump should have a fan as well as the pulley attached? I need to see if these parts are available from the prevuis owner (pump is completely off engine).

This car is a 4 speed auto (did they even make any other trannis???), and I couldn't even state the mileage as the p.o. has yet to call me with that info. I figure if it will turn over and all the electrical components seem to work, it ought to be worth $75 and a little bit of my time to tinker on. Agreed? It looks like crap, but it's a Benz, and I can afford to add it to my fleet. Hey, I need a winter car anyway!

Many thanks in advance for any advice you all may be able to provide... and many MANY thanks for reading through my ramblings!

Chris

The waterpump is indeed between the fan and the block, and has a fan-belt connecting it to the alternater.

They are pretty straight forward to remove and replace, if you take the thing apart there is a little donut shaped seal that cause leaking problems.

On the whole the model you mention is pretty cool to work on, what's $75?, buy it.

Careful though, Mercedes's are addictive.

Chris,

I understand trying to find an older, reasonably priced auto in South-Central Illinois that doesn't have some rust damage. Buy it! You should be able to handle the water pump repair. I just sold a VERY rusty '76 BMW 2002 that reliably got me through 2 years. And while you're at it--spring for a new paint job like I did (that dented can for $10 in the Walmart clearance aisle, a roller and brush, 3 helpful kids and one sunny afternoon). When you're done you'll have a car that looks like a hundred bucks! You'll never lose it in a parking lot and you probably won't have to lock it either!

Seriously, good luck and come back if you need more help. Maybe I'll see you on the road someday.

From experience, I'd have skipped my 220D and sprung for a little more expensive later model in better shape -- I love the car, but I'm not sure I can save it.

If it has visible rust, the floor pans are gone, the fenders are going, the trunk pan is shot, and the rocker panels are on the way out. Big pain in the butt to fix.

Water pump is a real pain -- you need some headless bolts to get the AC bracket back on (I assume it has AC -- if not, water pump is easy).

I wouldn't touch it, even for $75, unless it starts and runs, and the tranny works. All the electrical will be fine once it drys out -- strange stuff will happen for a while -- the turn signals will flash the fuel gauge, for instance!

You can still get most parts, but some are getting hard to find. If you don't want the carpets to fall out, you will have to fix the floors (rotted out by leaking window gaskets). Water pump is about $90 or so, not including the housing. You can get a used one if you need it (Bernard in Kentucky, south of Cinncinnatti has hundreds of old MBs in his yard!).

The W115s are a gas to drive, though, so if it runs, consider it. Basic running gear is hard to kill (and yes, there was a four speed manual available -- probably more of those around the the auto). Will get good milage (30 plus mpg), but SLOW. Meaning you learn not to pull out into traffic -- 0-60 times are on the order of 20 sec or so, much worse if on a hill going up!

Peter

220D

Peter you wet blanket!

He , he! I wonder if you would have bought my 300D for $200. Man what a rustbucket! True, I have replaced the floorplan with the hood off of a scrapped out VW, replaced the inner fenders with some old steel roofing. ( a few special modifications were needed here) I have great plans for the trunk. ( My wife bought a small swimming pool and were not going to use it now, so I'm going to cut the sides up and use it to line the trunk)

The jack points are very solid though! So I can work under it safely! One day I will have enough to buy a couple of those $10 cans of paint at wallmart and do a great ZEBRA stripe ( black and white) paint job!

I'm just a diesel addict, if the body isn't spectacular it's not a huge thing to me, but she's GOTTA CLATTER!!!!!!!!! and run like there's NO tomarrow!

BTW Chris I anwered your other question above. The primer pump is located on the fuel filter housing if it's a W115. Cheers, Tom

Primer pump is on the back end of the IP on a 220 -- only the later (post '73 with big bumpers) 240 and 300 have the hand pump on the fuel filter housing.

Knew I could count on Peter!

I really expected at least that cute little Icon with the tongue sticking out at me Peter, you know I deserved it!

Then he can get that pump from fast lane or Benz-bin for $11.95 right? I'm thinking about getting a box of those things, you see what they are selling for on ebay?

Tom:

yup, the cheap one -- a vast improvement on the original, which will surely be shot by now. Mine dumped fuel all over me (yuck!) when I tried to use it!
