Blue smoke?

Can excessive blue smoke be caused by valves being out of adjustment or stuck? I thought that I had an injector pump problem, #1, that doesn't seem to be the case. I loosened the plate on top of the pump and moved it a little, to where it looked like it should be compared to the others. I know I'm not supposed to do that but I figured it won't hurt at this point. Guess what, got some fuel out of it finally. Runs a little smoother too. I'm still getting lots of blue smoke. Is it possible for the timing chain to slip (jump) a link, I just had it replaced before this problem started and it ran fine to begin with, a little rough maybe. Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

More likely worn valve stem seals, valve guides and/or piston rings. How's your oil consumption?

uses maybe two quarts every 3k, most of that seems to be leakage. It never smoked before, just all of the sudden type thing. It's hard to tell how much it uses now, I don't drive it because I don't need to get a ticket for the blue cloud it leaves.

Hmmmm

Give us a little bit more of a description of what's happening to you.

Are you getting a light gray smoke with just a touch of blue? (this would tend to smell a lot like diesel - unburned fuel)

Are you getting a more solid blue smoke? (definitely motor oil)

And, are you getting a big cloud all the time now? Like idle, rev up, even after 5 minutes of running?

It's definately diesel (blue-gray, smells like diesel) and it happens all the time, a little less at low idle.
If this helps, it starts good, doesn't even turn over one full time before it starts, this after sitting for a couple weeks. Doesn't have the power it did before, much slower. Very poor mileage when I do drive it

Hmmm. OK.

Well, I haven't had to solve this problem - but I spend a lot of time reading here.

Someone with more experience will chime in and give you some things to check.

If it were mine, I think it would be time for a compression test on all cylinders. (Thinking you might have a low cylinder or two - not burning fuel properly.)

Also, I can see how it might be a fuel injection problem, but not sure whether it would be an injector(s) or the injection pump.

But compression I understand. And its a very basic indicator of engine health.

Good Luck - keep us posted.

Unburned diesel fuel out the exhaust does indeed have a blue tint to it. The smell is distinct though.

The REASON the injectors can cause this is that when they get dirty, they do not make a nice, evenly distributed fine spray pattern. This means that not all of that fuel burns, thus making it out the tailpipe and into the air as blue/gray smoke.

Have a great day,
