Help--Need a W116 Axle
I was trying to pull the axles of my '79 300SD to reboot them. One came off but the second was stubborn and instead of taking a break and cooling down, I took the grinder and a cutting wheel to the can to convience it, figuring I'd just pick up a new axle. They're hard to come by.
Does anybody have one for sale? The part number is 1163508320. It's the kind that has the splines on both the wheel and differential ends. Does anybody know if an axle from a different model will work (W126 3000SD, W116 450SE?)? Thanks James (I'm in Central Texas) |

You could of course "Ask Phil"
If all you cut was the Can; one place had the below Kit. Listed as the Outer Homokinetic joint. I do not know if inner and outer are the same. Their Part# 1263500237

All I cut was the can but at least one of the bearings and the race was worn. It would be nice if that kit would fix things. I'd study on it a little more.
Roy was kind enough to spend 45 mins on the phone with me today trying to help me find a new one but $5K for one was all we came up with. |

Used?
Do you want a used one? I'm going in search of a driver's door for "Next" tomorrow. I could be on the outlook for one in the junkyard.

I haven't tried CJV; I'll give them a call Monday.
daw two...thanks for the offer but it's a real pain and time waster pulling the old one and I can't ask you to do that. If they happen to have one or two laying around unattached and cheap, I might be interested. |

I've located a 1986 300SDL differential with axles at a junk yard. Does anybody know if it would bolt up and work properly to my '79 300SD?

Apparently I have the original axles on the '79; the ones with splines on both ends. Also, there is some sort of flange that connects to the differential that would allow me to use the newer axles that are only splined on the wheel hub end.
The MB dealership qouted $2K for new axles and the adapters (parts only). He also directed me to a parts shop that sells the parts cheaper but they werwe closed. Has anybody ever done this conversion and if so, what do you think? What do i want to watch out for? Thanks |
