Change Oil??
My 300D Turbo is a hobby car for me. I last changed the oil last June and have only put 2,000 miles on the car for the year. Shoud I change the oil or can I continue. Oh..the oil currently in the car is diesel rated oil. Thanks guys!

I would change it, it is good to change it at least once a year. Oil that is so lightly driven can get moisture and junk in it.

Im a big fan of changing oil. Its cheap insurance. Non synthetic oil does break down over time and can have acidic properties, not good for bearing babit. The good part of having oil that breaks down is that it cleans as it lubricates. Anyway I would change it. You will feel better knowing its fresh and clean.

It is generally recommended that you should change your oil and filter at least once a year, some say twice. One of the problems with low mileage cars is that the oil sits around absorbing moisture and anything else thats about. This can degrade the oil & then you could have all the problems associated with poor oil. Best change it & see if you have another use for the old oil like lubricating your bike chain and anything else that needs an oil.

As a counter point, chaning your oil too often increases engine wear because the additive package is always ramping up to is optimal protection ability. I'd still change the oil 1x a year, though.

We've had both of our diesels, '82 300SD and '84 300CD, since new and I've always changed the oil and filter every 3K miles, but never less than once a year. They both run like they did when they were new.

Could you share some data that supports the notion that oil improves with age/time in service?

X2 tango !! The only things that improve with age are cheese & red wine. Neither have application in motor oil.
Jason, the additive package does no "ramp up to is optimal protection ability" It starts at that point and deteriorates. As soot builds up lubricity & other important properties deteriorate also.

As long you're getting the car out for trips of reasonable length (say, half and hour or so) so that the condensation gets burned away, it's hard to imagine that you can't go longer than a year. My understanding is that the one-year interval is predicated upon driving patterns that involve only or predominantly short trips.
I was wondering about this myself: Why change oil once a year? If I only had one car, I would be doing 10,000 mile drain intervals with Mobil 5w40 synthetic and it would occur before one year. But since I have two, there's not a chance that both of them will get driven that much in year. So I'm going to just stick with my 10K interval and make sure both are regularly "excercised."

I guess I should add that the car is driven probably once a week. So it never really sits for weeks at a time.

If you do lots of short journeys you are effectively warming up the engine just enough to get (damp) air to condensate on the inside of the engine. In the old days oil and water would sort of mix to make a sludge (emulsion) that was noticeable - however these days modern oils contain anti-sludging ingredients so you probably won't see any evidence of this. But it doesn't mean that water isn't there. As it is commonly agreed that the majority of engine wear occurs when you start an engine you are better off changing the oil more regularly (and thus getting rid of the unwanted) than if you were doing say twice your annual mileage. |
