Simultaneous Window Closing and Motor Strain

While I don't know how many of our cars have this feature, at least on mine (91 and 92 300D) I can close all the windows and the sunroof simply by locking the driver door with the key. This is pretty convenient. However, I recently read some posts that indicated there is no current limitation on the window regulators. So if, for example, you push a switch to raise the window and hold the switch after the window is all the way up, you'll be putting a strain on the motor....which over time can't be good.

My question: does this also apply when using the close-'em-all-at-the-same-time feature? So that if, for example, the sunroof is closed and all the windows are open, am I putting a strain on the sunroof motor by closing the windows? If so, this would seem to be something of a design flaw. But perhaps all the motors are so massively over-designed that the current strain simply isn't an issue.

Anyway, I like the feature. But I won't using it if I'm contributing to premature regulator motor death. I was hoping that someone out there is sufficiently familiar with the design to shed some light.

Thanks.

The sunroof has a limit-switch when it is closed. The windows are designed for it, there isn't enough time to cause the armatures to overheat. It will also open the windows (and sunroof if closed with this feature) with the key.

I'd be more concerned about strain on window regulator arm as a result of the regulator needing lube. On my SD this is indicated by slow closing.

I think I'm starting to live in a state of constant fear of failing window regulators! Those things (especially rears) are expensive!!

They really aren't all that expensive, and they hardly ever fail unless you open/close all the windows 20 times a day. I have yet to have a motor or regulator fail on either of my cars....

On my 92, the right rear failed. Cost of a new regulator from Fast Lane is $335. In my book, that's expensive. Thankfully, my tech was able to provide a used part for $50.

I know. I usually buy my parts elsewhere...always looking for the best price.
